Basic midi editing problem

Hi everyone. Probably the simplest of fixes, but I'm very new to Midi.

I open a midifile and try to change the piano sound, say, from 1 to 3. I'm just choosing from the standard range of sounds--I haven't become adventurous yet.

Okay, so it changes when I play it, but as soon as I hit stop, it reverts to the previous sound. It won't save, either. If I save, close and reopen that file, the piano sound is the old, unwanted one.

I used to work with an old version of Logic in which you had to normalise the parameters, or something, before saving. Is there a fiddly little thing I need to do here?

I find the help manual to be a little daunting. I'm just not up on the terminology.

Is there any dumbed-down advice on how to change sounds and save the changes properly?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

What synth are you using?  My guess is that you are using TTS, which can be a bit confusing. Go to my website and look under the Music & Recording pages and read up on TTS.  I have basically stopped using TTS since it has GM voices (sounds) that are inferior to the sampled sounds in Sound Center, which you also have available in MC5 & 6.

I'm gonna recommend that you INSERT SYNTH and add the cakewalk sound center.... select a piano from the piano menu option.  That one won't change on you.

To add a different instrument to another track repeat the process.... INSERT SYNTH and select Bass from the menu and choose the bass, and so on with all the other instruments.

The number of things you an run will depend on the computer's power, and the max number MC permits.... in previous versions it has been 8 synths.  Freezing the synth or bouncing to track and removing the synth has permitted me to have more than 8 synth tracks in a given project.

My guess is also that you're trying to change the patch from the GUI (the TTS-1 window) which you can do only for auditioning the sounds.  if you want it to play that sound, you have to change the BANK, CHANNEL and PATCH from the MIDI Track's PROPERTIES.

    Just to clarify:
click on a track; go to INSERT (at the top), scroll down to SOFT SYNTH; scroll down to Cakewalk Sound Center.
What happens in the OPTIONS box that pops up?
(editing in: sorry Guitarhacker--just checking your website about that now. I couldn't get onto it earlier.)

Okay, so it changes when I play it, but as soon as I hit stop, it reverts to the previous sound. It won't save, either. If I save, close and reopen that file, the piano sound is the old, unwanted one.

Make sure you are saving your project as a cakewalk project file (check out the 'save as' when saving) instead of as a .mid file.  Your settings are saved in a cwp file.  Then load the cwp instead of the mid file after that.
