driver problem

I used to use the internal drivers to run Sonar out of the headphone jack of my laptop. Not ideal, but it was fine for then. I went on to bigger and better things and was having 'others' lug around my gear. I'm back to the 1 man show and duo and want to streamline, and go back to the internal drivers rather than the ASIO with the external interface. No matter which option I choose, WDM or MME, the program doesn't work right. If I choose WDM, Sonar won't play at all. If I choose MME, it makes the tracks sound warbly and slow. Any ideas?

    How many audio tracks are you playing? Are you using soft synths? Have you considered using your external interface to export your projects to stereo audio tracks and playing those live instead of using Sonar to play project files?

    I doubt if your internal audio interface is up to the task of playing your Sonar projects the way you need it to do. I see your two options as either exporting the projects as wave/mp3 files and playing those live or getting a smaller external interface like the Cakewalk UA-1G. It will fit in your pocket. Or do both and get a smaller external interface and play wave/mp3 files live.

    100% what Chappel says. I export all my backing tracks as wave files and play them with a netbook and it's realtech headphone jack. I have been doing solo and other gigs like this for 7 years.  I tried an interface and it made very little difference to the sound that I could hear through a PA.
    I can't even imagine operating Sonar live? Way to much could distract me from my job.
    I use Win Amp for playback. It has the perfect set of tools, I also use a USB foot controller to start and advance songs. I never take my hands off my guitar.

    Thanks guys. I did realize after posting this, I used just sequenced tracks with internal soft synths before. Now, I'm using audio tracks. BIG difference in playback quality! lol

    I'm not sure I follow what you mean that you did differently to make it sound better.  do you mean you bounced the softysynths to audio (or freeze - which accomplishes the same thing).
     
    I don't disagree with my friends' advice above, but if you want better latency settings and you don't want an external soundcard (which is ideal, IMO), try using ASIO4ALL and changing to ASIO driver mode.  or is that what you were meaning in your OP?

    I think what you mean is you have already switched to stereo playback files as apposed to live midi sequences? And yes there has to be a big difference because you can master all your files so there is a consistent balance from song to song. You won't achieve that with live midi.
    I am slowly re doing all my MIDI tracks with real bass and drums. Only keeping keyboards parts, kick and percussion as midi. Getting lots of possitive feedback about the improvement from long time ( fans?) clients.
