SONAR COMPRESSORSand soundproofing??
Hello all I am using sonar 8.5 studio my convertor is M-audio ok I am recording well under 20Db I am a vocalist and I know how to record vocals I step back when I sing loud however I when I step back to sing, the recording still clips and you can actually hear how I have step back mostly because I need to soundproof my room I guess. Anyways what can I do to resolve the clipping if I step back any more I am going to have a hard time fixing it when I began tweeking the tracks. Is there a certain compressor that I can use in sonar to assist with the clipping. Oh and I live in a condo Im pretty sure my loudness is traveling through the ceiling because I am recording in the closet I dont want my neighbors upstairs to hear me any ideas on how to soundproof my ceiling

I sure hope you meant -20 db. If you're clipping during the recording I don't think anything in Sonar is going to help because everything is geared towards post-recording editing. Are you seeing actual clipped waveforms after recording? If I were you I would double check all the settings on the Audio Interface. You might be overdriving your interface. Which model is it? Does it have an Input level Control? Usually these devices have an Input Level Control and an Output Level Control.

Yes I meant under -20db and its a profire M-audio interface it does have input level control but usually when I record under-20db Im fine I am recording in a walk in closet with the door closed do you think that it causing the issue should I try to record at -15db

Have you tried setting the level at, say, -5 -10 dB when you're singing loud, and then step closer when you sing softly :o/ ? What kind of mic do you have? Does it have a level switch? Sometimes turning your head instead of stepping further is more effective, depending on the microphone. Google for soundproofing and acoustic treatment. There's lots of info about it. There's quite a lot on the SONAR forums as well, pitty that the search engine is so unreliable.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

soundproofing is expensive. there's almost no possible way you're going to stop sound from travelling out of your condo into the next, but there are things you can do to reduce the levels they get to something which may or may not even be noticable. thick heavy blankets, mattresses, etc can be used to help reduce the sound that travels through the ceiling and walls. do some searching like Kalle said. use google to search the forums by typing in the keywords then use site:forum.cakewalk.com as the qualifier and it will limit your search to these forum.s

Do you see clipping visible in a track's waveform? If you recorded the track at -20, meaning the record meter didn't go much above -20 while recording, the track shouldn't be clipping. If it sounds distorted, that could be due to the main output being too high. Even if the tracks and buses are not clipping, the main output can be clipping and cause distortion.

Yeah, this new computer doesn't seem to have any image editing capability. In Paint, you can make it bigger, but that also makes the white empty area bigger. I tried cropping it using Photobucket's edit tools, but that didn't work either. Probably user error.

you can do it in paint, too, it's just not very intuitive. however, I suggest you download paint.net (google it) steve strummer turned me on to it. it's donationware. it's free to use and you can donate if you want, but it's not required. and it's nearly as powerful as photoshop!

Beagle thanks I though of that, but I just say hey Im going for it and I just sung after pondering recording for hours I was ready then after actually recording for hours I didnt care I just wanted the songs finished I thought what you said, their isnt really any way that I would be able to soundproof the closet so I just recorded without regards to my neighbors lol!! They turn their music up loud so I figured now we are somewhat even!! Oh and I love your profile pic!!! Grey you are right it is distortion I changed the track to I believe its stereo so it would be so loud on one speaker and that fixed the problem I was confused because the waveform didnt clip at all so I figured it had to be the speakers and it surely was!! Thanx you guys
