Mikey, the mics, and his onboard preamps.

I've been putting it off... telling myself I can't justify buying the Nagra or the SD 788T because I'm in such a small market... so I rent them when I need to... which perpetuates the inability to profit from owning and operating one.

This low cost unit came out recently and the price performance factor made me finally buy one dispite my interest in a full pro grade preamp.

I'm gonna use it as a portable run and gun recorder for the more and more popular HDSLR shoots we've been doing and so I'm going to use the built in pres as much as I dare.

I hope I can keep it in the sweet spot. :-)

Tascam DR-680

It just arrived last night and I'm working through the manual... so far everything seems remarkably well thought out.

anyways....

best,
mike

    from the specs:

    • Record a stereo track at up to 24-bit/192kHz, as well as up to 4 channels of MP3 audio for web-ready recording
    • USB 2.0 connector makes it easy to connect the recorder directly to your computer for file transfer
does this mean it's USB connection is only for file transfer or is it a soundcard?

if it has soundcard drivers then I would be very wary of purchasing it for that purpose.  I do not trust tascam's software at all.  they have proven over and over again they can't "get it right."

if you're using it only for pres and portable recording, then it's probably a great system.  tascam DOES do hardware well.  they just can't seem to integrate the two.

He's going to record some fields to .bwf's with it.

Nominal EBU loudness with plenty of balanced headroom.

    Just what you need.

    Hi Beagle,

It's just a USB connection for offloading files and firmware updates... so yes, it's a solid state hardware recorder. It's sort of like 2 Zoom H4s stuffed into one box.. and the buttons and the menu seem tailored to the various things you have be able to do quickly when field recording.

I have to get a handle on the metering... like so many new devices the -something dBFS lines aren't labeled... it's a mystery meater... I'm gonna run some tone thru it and see what it records as at each line.

    It sounds OK.

Hi Jonbouy.... I like you too. ;-) wiseguy.

    I wish I had one.

I'm often out and think I wish I could capture that somehow.

    Like you need taunting...

That must be the biggest serving of refried beans I ever heard.

    Needs more buttons.

    You are spot on.

When you are doing run and gun field work the more buttons and less menu driven stuff the better.

You need to go from one mic doing this, to 3 mics doing that on the whim of your producer... and fumbling thru a menu is stressful when the change happens and some one shouts "waiting on sound!!!"

This unit has lots of menu stuff but the reason I am excited is because it seems designed to minimize the little stresses that can add up and keep you on edge.

    best,
    mike
