Adjusting gain/volume levels on same track

Okay, this may be an easy question but I'm just getting my hands around X1. I'm working on a medley and having issues with volume levels. So on track 4 I record vocals for the first part of the medley. On the same track I record the second part of the medley. The vocal levels are fine for the first part but to low for the second part. If I raise the overall level of the track, then the first part vocals are too hot.  So the question is can I take a section of track 4 (vocal levels for second part) and raise the volume level for just that section without affecting the overall level of track 4?  I know I can easily record vocals for the second part of the medley on another track, but when I'm dealing with multiple vocalists overlaying multiple harmony's, this gets really complicated and confusing. I appreciate any help here.

Of course you can. What you need is a volume envelope.

Right click track 4 and select "Arm for Automation".

Play your project and when you get to the end of the first part of the song, nudge the fader up to where you want it roughly to be.

Stop the project and disarm the automation

Go into track view and you''ll see the envelope you've just created. Now you can go in and fine tune the placement and levels of the different sections. you can get as creative as you want to by adding nodes at various points on the envelope.

There's a section all about automation in the manual. Give it a good read.

I think I would automate the Gain (input level) to get the levels of the two sections matched, leaving Volume (output level) automation for eventual mixing of the vocal with the rest of the tracks.

Thanks a lot!!  Very helpful.  I will give it a go and read that section of the manual.  I also have the training video by Groove 3.  I will see if there is info on that regarding automation.

Or you could automate the gain in exactly the same way.

    Either way works

Thanks brundlefly, so we had a session last night with 3 vocalists/guitarist all laying down multiple part harmonies. Would I not have to automate the Gain (input level) during the initial recording session, or can that be set post recording?  It's very apparent that I need to get my hands around "automation" and learn it well! I threw this together and mixed down (mp3) to get it out to the rest of the band members so they can learn their parts for our gig tomorrow, but I want to take what I have (post recording) and polish it up, add the rest of the band (Bass, Drums/Percussion) and have a polished professional mix down for our demo CD.

"Gain" in this case is simply the volume level being input to the track from the disk, not the "Gain" of your pre-amp when you record.

If you open console view and look at a single verticle strip you have the volume fader at the bottom and the Gain at the top with FX bin and eq inbetween.  Use (automate) the gain to set a constant level from different clips.

Karyn, Understood.  I wasn't implying "Gain" from my preamp.  Thanks for the clarification and info.

To further clarify for future reference:

SONAR's track Gain controls only affect the input level to the track from existing recorded audio clips (or soft synth output, which is buffered up and handled like recorded audio rather than live input). The level recorded and/or input-monitored from a live input is not affected.
In your case where the clips have already been recorded, track Gain will do the job.
