Old MIDI Keyboard with M-Audio Fasttrack Pro
Found an old Yamaha PRS-175 keyboard and noticed that it has MIDI in/outs. My sound card is a M-Audio FTP with midi in/out. Can I simply plug the keyboard into my sound card (with midi cables) and be off and running or do I need to install drivers? The keyboard is old so I doubt win7 drivers are available. Also, assuming I can create midi sounds, should I use the same procedure as I do for my drums by inserting a midi track, softsyth, and assign to audio track?

You can just plug in to the Fast Track. No keyboard drivers needed. The procedure is (probably) the same for any MIDI device. Select the input and output, channel, bank, patch. Check out www.cakewalknet.com to see if the Instrument Definition for the PSR-175 is available.

Thanks Greg but the link to www.cakewalknet.com is no longer valid. So do I do midi out from soundcard to midi in on keyboard, midi out from keyboard to midi in to soundcard? Finally, what softsyth works best for the various piano, organs,etc....?

outputs go to inputs and inputs go to outputs. you only need the ins def if you plan to use the PSR-175 for OUTPUT. if you plan to use softsynths for output then you don't need the ins def anyway. I think the cakewalknet.com site has been abandonded - it's not been kept up since about sonar 7.

Finally, what softsyth works best for the various piano, organs,etc....? The Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth is a General Midi soft synth and contains all the GM instruments. It is a good place to start when first working with soft synths.

I use the keyboard for all my MIDI sounds while working on a project. Once all the tracks are done (HA!), I start thinking about which synths/patches to use.

One more question if you don't mind gents...... do I need a device driver for this? If so, is does it have to be the PRS-175 or is there a universal driver I could use. This thing is pretty old and I can't find updated drivers on the yamaha website. Thanks again!

No. If you connect it to the Fast Track, the drivers for the Fast Track will handle the MIDI. If the computer 'knows' the Fast Track is connected, it will work. It should work. I've never had to get drivers for my Yamaha PSR-GX76 (and it's 11 years old!) or Alesis SR-16 and they both work perfectly well through my Saffire audio/MIDI interface.

you would only need the drivers for the PSR-175 if it connects to the computer via USB. since you're connecting it via MIDI then no drivers are needed.
