Any thoughts about a surround mic and a great windscreen?

I am just starting to look around for a super easy to set up solution for surround sound field recording.

I am hoping to purchase a single object that has 4 to 5 mics and is compact. I want to get some sort of assembly so that I can get one really really good windscreen system to deal with all.

I'd like set up time to take less than a minute.

I'm not looking for anything in the $5k - $8k range but might get excited about the right design if it stays under $2k.

I've got plenty of good mics, now I want something that sets up really quickly and doesn't require FIVE really expensive windscreens. :-)

I'm off to study... but wondered if any one else has already found some good solutions.

Thanks,
mike

    Hi Mike,

I don't know of any single piece solution, but you might want to talk to Alan Hyatt at PMI/Studio Projects.
Make a suggestion... and you might see the product developed.
Years back, I suggested that Alan release a C24 like (stereo C12) mic (dual elements that rotate on the body to set X/Y width).  Ultimately he released the LSD.

Back in the day I lusted after the Soundfield ST250 mic. Looks like it's been discontinued but here are their current offerings.  I don't see prices anywhere, but I didn't search very hard. Maybe the ST350, ST450, or SPS200 would fit your budget? Way back when, the ST250 was around $2000, IIRC.

Another option is the Core Sound Tetramic. It's $1000.  They offer a 30 day trial period with full refund minus shipping and handling. I keep meaning to give that one a try, but then it keeps getting bumped down the priority list.

And the lower end Holophone mics are in your budget. But I couldn't figure out from their website if the low end mics could put out a discrete 5.1 or only did a matrixed ProLogic II 2-channel signal.

But I prefer the Ambisonic approach of the Soundfield or the Core Sound of generating a '5.1' signal over the Holophone method. It's much more flexible in post.
