The Broken
I just finished a song for a client. My ears are toast and I could use a fresh pair but I have a deadline. Would love to get any feedback, suggestions and reactions before I submit it to him. http://soundcloud.com/open-sky-productions Thanks in advance, Steve

Steve, Outstanding production. Evocative music to get the Gospel into ears that wouldn't normally hear it. that break at 3:15 is super sweet. Lot's of interesting places along the way through this soul lament and confession.

opensky, Great stuff! I really love the vocal work here especially right when they get introduced. You nailed that. I think the thick guitar they have is a bit ear fatiguing and would suggest to trim a bit of the upper mids. If you do that, you might also see that the crashes will start to feel a bit too big as well and they may need cut in a similar way. This will probably help the bass guitar in those spots as well as it competes for some notice in those areas. Just suggestions for a very well done mix all-in-all. Thanks for sharing, Tom

Sounds really good. A couple of things that stuck out for me: At 1:27 the vocals seem too dry and upfront - like they stick out. Maybe a little verb or delay to wet them down slightly. The kick seems a little lost. It's almost too low in volume. Cool song.

I would record another track of the rhythym guitar and use it with the existing one and pan them left and right instead of using the delay. Agree with the comments about the vocals. Otherwise great song! It sounds a bit like Something Like Silas

Very cool tune. Some parts remind me of early Tool. Few small nits. Vocals sound a tad too quiet in the verses and a tad too loud in the heavy parts. I get the dynamic feel you're going for but it's a little drastic on my setup. I agree about the kick, kinda lost, maybe more beater head slap, a little more definition in the bass/kick relationship. The full on loud areas seem pretty dang squashed, might be the cause of the 'guitar fatigue' someone mentioned. that's subjective though, some people love that sound. Mix feels really close to me though.

Hi Steve, Great song. I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been mentioned, though. Vocals, kick...you know Overall it sounds great from here.

+1 on this. The trick with the vocal is getting that distant sound without having to strain the old ears.

Since he's footin' the bill I just try to work around it.

Good tune, and mostly quite well done. The track mix felt a little hot in the louder passages, and (as Ed mentioned) the vocal transition from soft to loud could have been smoother and less of a 'jolt.' Now, that's just my take, but you're right: you gotta' give the guy what he wants. Overall it's a good production, and could go as is.

Since others have mentioned, I'd have to say I agree about the difference in volume on the vocals on verse and choruses. But overall, this is a great track!

Steve, at first I thought the vocal during the heavy bits was too quiet, but really it just sits back in the mix with the guitars, it's still clear and easy to understand. As far as the quiet vocal part, it sounds like it should be that way. But the mix itself is pristine, superlative. I might agree about the kick even after the remix. Great job.

No negs here. As is this sits extremely well to my ears. OTOH: Macro-dynamics may be exagerrated (too wide) (rests and incremental pomp) and micro-dynamics (ultra-compression of tracks) a bit narrow for some listeners. Your client may need to advise on that though ... how much contrast preceding the metal cries, etc. MHG has excellent dyanamic balances with his metal ballads, his advise might be solicited, IMHO ... since most of us aren't able to advise on so excellent a piece as this. Awesome song and mixing my friend! I see you thoroughly delight in producing haughty extremes of dynamics! Note: I just looked above and see Philz, Yoyo, and others have validated my crony ponderings, but they are rock wizards ... not metal meisters.
