Droopy sustains from NI pianos

I've recently installed Komplete 7 (of course, 2 weeks later, Komplete 8 was announced), and I've got an issue with the pianos (Vienna, New York, etc.) when I use Kontakt as a plug-in with Sonar X1. I hit the keys, press the sustain pedal, and when I release the keys, the sustain volume drops by about half even though the sustain pedal is still down. After dropping by half, the notes continue to ring and decay normally until the pedal is released. Is this what they call half-pedaling?

This doesn't happen when I use Kontakt as a stand-alone, all else being the same; the notes sustain fully as normal. It only happens when I plug it into the X1 synth rack.

It also doesn't happen to other instruments in the Kontakt libraries, like sustained horns and strings. Just the pianos.

I'm using a Korg M3 as MIDI device. I've tried changing pedal ports on the keyboard and assigning CC#64; no difference. And like I said, in stand-alone mode everything seems to work correctly.

Also, when a recorded MIDI track is played back, the notes behave normally with full sustain. It only happens when I'm playing in real time.

Does anyone know of a reason for this? Am I missing some sort of half-pedal setting in X1?

I'd appreciate anybody's help. Much thanks.

That's a pretty unusual combination of symptoms. But the likely cause of your issue is that your Korg (like my Roland RD300s) is sending All Notes off (CC123) when you release the last key, and Kontakt does not handle this correctly - it should ignore it when sustain is active, but it doesn't. If this is the problem it may be that you're hearing the half-pedal modeling in Kontakt ringing on after the main sample sound has been cut off.

If sending All Notes Off can't be turned of on the Korg (it can't on the RD), you'll have to do what I do, which is to add Cakewalk's MIDI Event FIlter MFX to the MIDI part of the Instrument track, and set it up to block CC123.

Due to some bugginess in the MFX, this gets a little tricky, but here's the drill:

The strange thing is that you should experience the same problem with stand-alone Kontakt. I'll have to check and see if there's any difference in that respect with Alicia's Keys.

EDIT: Did a quick check, and All Notes OFF is a problem with the standalone player, too, as expected.

Thanks for the tip B-fly. I'm still pretty new to DAWs, but even I thought that was a strange problem.

I did find a workaround; the problem only occurs if I use the simple instrument track that is set up when inserting Kontakt into the synth rack. If I run it through separate MIDI and audio tracks, the pianos work perfectly. My understanding isn't deep enough to know why that would make a difference, though it's probably clearer to you. If you have an explanation and the time to share it, I'd be all ears.

    Thanks again for your reply.

Hmmm.... that's a new on on me. I could speculate, but the best way to figure it out would be to insert another instance of Kontakt as a simple instrument track alongside your working pair of MIDI and Audio tracks, split it (right-click the track for the context menu option), and compare the parameters between the two pairs of tracks, especially I/O ports and channels.
