Clicks & Pops problem

Hi

Running quite a good system. Win 7, I7 Processor 64 bit. 6GB Ram M-Audio ULTRA 8r Interface 128 Buffer.
Random pops recording audio. Not overloaded. Like electric crackle for a few milliseconds . When you look at the wave the crackle is not spiking, sits within the sound amplitude. 2 things...Any Suggestions or clarification I can give to help someone with ideas. 2 any good restoration tools that will plug in to Sonar. Only recording 24 bit 44100K Samplerate. not really pushing anything. Can happen on the first audio track I record or any thereafter. Also can be noisy dropping in or out, small pops.

Cheers

Check your DPC Latency (not to be confused with audio latency)
Check to see of one of your drives is currently in PIO mode (Device Manager under each HD controller channel)
Make sure you don't have the U8R connected to a USB 3.0 controller.  Connect to a USB 2.0 port.

Im sure Jim has set you on the right path, but the way the weave file looks has no bearing on the end dB result. The picture of the wave file is pre gain, pre-fader, pre bus, pre master bus and pre main outs. So idf you have any kind of effects and level changes in any of those, your track can clip.

So check your entire gain stage

Hey--that caught my eye.  Do you mean that in general audio interfaces don't like USB 3 ports?  I think mine's plugged into one, and I have a perpetual problem with the interface not working in all circumstances.

I had a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 and it did not like USB 3. Even though on the USB 3 card box it says backwards compatible with USB 2.0. I guess they forgot the word "some" or "most".

That being said, every other usb device that I tested on the 3.0 port worked fine.. Just not the 8i6.

I actually sent the 8i6 back because it was very unstable on my system (even on a 2.0 port)
I have a Roland Quad Capture now (which I absolutely love). I wonder if it will work on a USB 3 port. I'll have to try it sometime.

I have noticed crazy loud clicks and pops when using Audio Snap with the '64 bit double precision engine' checked.  Goes away when un-checked.

    Hi Jim

Sorry not to have replied sooner. I spent yesterday investigating what you suggested. Many years ago I came across DMA so was aware of it. My system has is using a raid controller for two striped SATA RAID disks. Even after a hour long support call to Dell who knew almost nothing about DMA (Wasn't on their help desk script!) I think I've confirmed that SATA doesn't use DMA because the transfer rate is faster than DMA allows anyway. (In danger of sounding like I know more than I do at this point). I'm using USB2, not 3.
If I use Cubase, which I have but haven't learn't and don't want to use because I love Sonar X1, have invested in it both time and money and everything takes me 4 times longer when I use Cubase, I don't know keyboard shortcuts etc, However, no p ops and no clicks. I learn't yeterday I can drag and drop tracks from Sonar into cubase, but not the other way round. Anyway clicks still occur in Cubase when the file is copied. But I get no clicks if I record in Cubase.
So it does seem like it's an issue with Sonar.
