It's been a long time for me... like over 20 years... but here goes. Is Dave going to need to know whether he has a Moving Magnet or Moving Cartridge cartridge? I seem to recall my preamps had two different cartridge hookups. best, mike

Karyn Willy Jones [Cakewalk ] I've actually come to really enjoy the silence (insert Depeche Mode reference here) between flipping sides. Not all current music takes advantage of it but there is definitely an emphasis that gets put on certain tracks by the physical attention involved in getting up and turning it over. Sometimes the space almost becomes part of the album. Jeff Waynes' War of the Worlds is a classic example of this. The short break you get while turning over / changing to disk 2 is just right to seperate the sections of the work. I agree, the silence whilst changing sides or disks is certainly the best part of that particular work.

Is Dave going to need to know whether he has a Moving Magnet or Moving Cartridge cartridge? Good point ... MM is probably more common so some of the more budget minded phono pre's only have MM inputs (such as the Audio Technica) but the audiophile community like their MC's. I am not trying to plug Needle Doctor but I looked more closely at their site and they also carry the Pro-Ject line of pre's along with many others with some nice descriptions. http://www.needledoctor.com/

Is Dave going to need to know whether he has a Moving Magnet or Moving Cartridge cartridge? Yes. Mine has a switch on the back to handle either type.

that would be moving magnet or MM the deal with the moving coils (or MC) is that the design typically has a lower output than a moving magnet so the moving coil input on a phono preamp has a higher gain than the moving magnet input personally, I think you are perfectly safe with a phono pre that only has a moving magnet input the moving coils are typically the domain of audiophiles and you could literally spend thousands of dollars on a moving coil cartridge (that said, there are good moderately priced moving coil cartridges so you need to be aware when you buy a new "needle")

The DJ has been responsible for helping to keep vinyl alive by keeping hardware sales at a level that makes them worth making IMO.I know a lot of them also went digital but its still cool to have a few turntables. When I serviced this type of thing, the belts were the first to go. If you had an old TT and it sat in your attic the rubber belts would get like chewing gum after several years unless you owned a direct drive turntable. It was fun to work on them. the timing of the platter was checked with a slot painted disk and a flouresant light acting like a strobe. If the image stayed still you were at the correct speed......those were the days. I recently seen a turntable with a usb on it.

I don't miss them as much as I used to, but I miss the overall relation that we had with music back then, when you had to walk to the record store, pick the one thing you wanted to ear and then just sit there and listen over and over, studying the artwork and reading the credits. Listening to music on computers certainly doesn't help, as it's an invitation to multitask... You buy an album on iTunes, you start vaguely reading the credits, and you inexplicably end up on wikipedia reading about the Mexican Starring Frog of Sri Lanka because you clicked on a series of links when all you really wanted to know in the first place was who else that engineer has worked with... But that was like, 3 minutes ago, before your attention shifted for the 5th time. :s

I read in Sound On Sound that the latest Arcade Fire album ws mastered TO Vinyl and then Re-digitized to CD to attain a true vinyl sound. Apparently one of the most expensive mastering jobs ever done.

In recent years I have bought some CDs to replace vinyl editions that had some scratches and pops on them. When playing the CDs, I still hear the pops and scratches in the expected places. Can anyone say 'Pavlov'?

Speaking of cracks, pops and scratches I used to have a life sized inflatable doll made of vinyl. She was part of a stage show for awhile. (honest...really...) I miss her.

Can anyone say 'Pavlov'? It's been over twenty years since I haven't listened to the vinyl yet I still hear them every time I listen to the first Black Sabbath album - the pops and scratches are forever associated with that one... along w/ a certain quite distinct smell. ;)
