Sonar 6 Audio Options Dialog Won't Save

All:

On so many levels this post is bizarre .... Where to begin...

Okay it's 2011 and I am posting about Sonar Produce 6 why???? Because the Lab I teach in is STILL using Sonar 6 more on that later.  But the information below is relevant I believe so here goes:

#1 If I open the Audio Options dialog box and click the OK button - the dialog box won't close and no settings changes can be saved.  For example if I want to check ON Play Effect Tails after Stop - when I click OK the Dialog box just "bounces" and will never accept the change - only CANCEL will close the dialog box.

#2 In some historical posts there is information about running Sonar as Administrator as well as the installation and turning UAC off (Vista and Win7) but none of that allowed the dialog box to close.

Now to the 'relevant' information for all installs forward.

#3 It seems the culprit in this case is a the Dell Optiplex 790

Dell Optiplex 755's through the new 790 Desktops (and probably MiniTower) have a front and a back mini stereo jack for Microphone and Headphone/Speakers.  If you do not have anything plugged into these inputs (front or back) changes to the audio options dialog box are not possible.  Under Vista 32 / Vista 64 or Win7 64.  Now these may be strange combinations of an old rev of Sonar and a newer OS set - but there may be other issues associated with the Optiplex sensing active components connected to the Mic/Speaker jacks.

We are exploring the BIOS to see if there are options for this.

My goal was to document the behavior as best as possible for others to search on.

Best

Edit:  Also ... Make sure that whatever your UAC and install privileges are ALWAYS right click and Run As Administrator during install and especially the first run in which you have to enter the Registration Code - this is also 'key' - pun intendid

I have read/seen other users with problems in vista/win7 and onboard soundcards without anything plugged into the I/O and it doesn't have anything to do with sonar really - it has to do with the windows control panel and the soundcard drivers.  I'm pretty sure you would find the same thing happening in the windows soundcard options for windows sound and for windows media player, etc.

if you're not using the onboard soundcard, then hopefully you have the option to disable it in BIOS and that should solve the problem.  not all BIOS options allow this tho.  another option is to buy a headphone adapter from radio shack for a few bucks and plug it in the input and output jacks.

    B:
Right - nothing to do with Sonar explicitly - but would probably show up to others just as it did to me when I was making a change in the Audio Options box #and# running SP6 with Win7 - I believe Sonar Versions after 7 that did not require a restart for changes in the Audio Settings would not see this issue since it lacks the exclusivity that S7 and below did.

Sounds like a driver issue, Don. That's a RealTek audio interface, is it not?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Bit:

I'm not in the lab, but I think the 790's have RealTek - the interesting thing is that the device name changes if you have something plugged in or not.  We faced this a year ago when my SysAdmin and I built the lab image - I just didn't document it here.  Honestly I hate working with internal devices - But in a lab of 25 systems it's not feasible to add devices yet.

    best

Hello! I'm new to the Cakewalk forum, and have the same problem with the Audio Dialog Box not saving any changes. The box won't go away if you click on "OK", and the only option is to hit "Cancel" and it won't save myr changes. I'm still using Cakewalk Home Studio 9 with a Windows XP machine, and my knowledge is a little limited on all of Cakewalk functionality, so please bear with me. How can I have the Dialog Box save my changes? It doesn't seem to matter if I have headphones and a mic plugged in or not at the time I try to close the box.

I need to enable the "simultaneous record/playback" option to see if I can get an imported audio file to playback, while I'm recording a audio input with the mic. I can hear the imported file just fine if I'm recording midi, but not while I'm recording with the mic. I have a Soundmax Integrated Digital HD Audio card (driver 5.10.1.4326), which I'm learning may or may not be the problem. Again, I don't understand all of the technical functions with Cakewalk, but I do know something is wrong with the audio options dialog box and I'm not sure how to fix it. Perhaps fixing it will allow me to further troubleshoot my real problem with the simultaneous playback.

Any advice or suggestions are greatly welcomed. Thank you!
