Sonar X1 midi out problem - Presonus & Win7

Hello. I'm hoping someone can help me.

I just upgraded to Sonar X1b Pro on a brand new computer running Win 7 Pro 64. (Bios, drivers, and Windows are all updated. No other software is yet installed.)

I'm using a Presonus Firepod (FP10) as my audio interface (installed latest drivers from Presonus).

The problem is that Sonar won't to recognize my Firepod's midi out. Sonar sees the midi in, but only lists the MS wavetable as an option for the midi out.

Everything else - in my limited testing - appears to work fine. The Firepod syncs right away, and there are no audio dropouts, etc.

The Firewire port is on the motherboard (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dp67bg.html) and has a supported TI chipset. In Windows, through device manager, I've tried legacy both the legacy firewire driver and the TI driver (default) and the same thing happens.

All other audio devices are disabled. I've also tried reinstalling the Firepod driver.

I'm curious:

1) Is anyone else using a Firepod/FP10 in Win7/Sonar X1? If so, if the midi out is available?
2) Any troubleshooting tips? Presonus seems to think it's a Sonar issue, but I'm not certain.

I should add that the Firepod works fine in WinXP and Sonar 7. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Up until about a month ago, I'd used a Firepod for about four years. Great and underrated  interface. Unfortunately I've nothing useful to impart as the MIDI just worked fine for me, and I didn't encounter this problem. Just letting you know so you know that it is possible to get it working with X1 (my system is also W7 64 bit).

Presonus tech support are, in my experience, not very helpful, alas.

Throwing out random guesses... do you have anything else connected that shows up as a MIDI interface, like a keyboard or anything?

@ John T. Thanks for the reply. Good to know that it should in theory work. No other devices are connected...

And yes, so far my experience w/ Presonus tech support has not been stellar.

    I think that's their pat answer to everything: "Oh, you've got <other company's device / app>? That's the problem".

I've still got the firepod. If I get the time, I'll plug it in again tomorrow and see if I can tell you anything useful.

If your system is showing the MS Wavetable Synth as a MIDI out then it's likely you are using the MME driver mode.

You really need to be using the WDm or ASIO drivers for your device.

Have just plugged in and got everything back up and running with the Firepod.

The presence of the MS Wavetable synth isn't significant; I've got both that and the Firepod MIDI out. Can have either, both or neither active, no problems any which way.

Mudgel is right though that you should definitely be using the ASIO driver mode.

I'm going to leave this handy for plugging in and switching on for the next couple of days, as let me know if I can help with any more diagnosis. In the meantime, couple of thoughts:

    - possibly dumb question, but where are you checking what MIDI ports are available? Just in the console / track views, or have you looked in Preferences > MIDI > Devices? The interface has to be checked there in order to be available elsewhere.

    - Not hugely likely to be relevant, but no harm in trying: with your interface on and synced to the computer, launch Sonar while holding down shift, and let it run through it's "personalisation" process. It's surprising what oddities this can fix.

    - I have checked the driver version, and I am using 5.13.0.0, which I believe is the most recent.

    - Do you have any on-board sound card that could be causing confusion anywhere? If so, try disabling it in the computer's BIOS.

    Thanks, Mudgel and John T.

I did try relaunching Sonar holding down the shift key, but this didn't resolve it.

Onboard sound card is disabled in BIOS, and HDMI sound out on video card is disabled in Device Manager.

To clarify - when I say no midi outs, I mean that the Firepod midi out doesn't show as an option under Preferences > MIDI > Devices.

Within Sonar, I do have the driver mode set to ASIO.

The driver mode in Windows (Control Panel.Sounds) shows up as WDM, though, and I do not see any way to change this...

    I'm also using version 5.13.0.0

I also have the driver mode showing as WDM in Windows Device Manager, so that doesn't appear to be significant.

    Hmm.

Can a monitoring app like MIDI-OX or other DAW app see it?

I've ran MidiPortConfig - a midi monitoring app - and it also does not see the Firepod midi out. This leads me to believe it may be a conflict w/ the Presonus driver and Windows 7, but I'm at a loss to what is causing it.

Odd. I suppose that at least means you can go back to PreSonus saying you've established it's not a Sonar issue. Weird that it works fine in XP though.
