Wookiee with a Tele...

Thought I'd take a break and let you know about this.

I've got the top plate ready. I liked the neck for Ruby so much I'm going to build with the same combination. Wanted to use some flame maple
in the middle but it hasn't acclimated.

Can't show the Sapele for the body...hasn't arrived yet.

Ruby was the first time for me to build with mahogany/sapele and I really like working with it.

This will be my last build for awhile. I mean for here. I might have to build one for a local guy but my intention is start
work on shop. Hope I can put him off.  My hobbies will have to go on hold.
It's been a great time doing this and sharing here. Those that offered support gave me more help than you may realize and I've
appreciated every minute of their/your efforts.

Back when I started Grants I don't know how many of these tops I made....every one of them would blow out or I'd screw it up. His
was needing two- one front and back and they needed to half way match ( he has no idea what that top and back cost ! LOL....and I'm not telling! )
Well this is the last piece out of all those and it's only going to have a zebra top so this is it.
If the control cut-out looks to big it's because I'm going to inlay the cover. I've never liked those covers screwed to the top of the body.

So....I hope this thing doesn't grow fur and try to pull my face off!......The start of the Wookiee Tele!

That looks pretty clean for so early on in the project.

    A good omen!

    Thanks Mike.
It's been going real smooth. I've been home alone so focused with plenty of time.
I blew off the yard work.

Me too Bapu in the sense that a new project will start that I'm wanting to get built.
The yards a wreck and the slab is ready for me to get busy. It'll be nice to have all
that back in order and a shop to build guitars in. A little better organized I imagine.

I can relax some now  with the top plate having a great fit around the neck and every
thing within a nats balls of center.
Now the top of the neck profile is done.

That's sweat....it's hot here but I think it's from nerves. Power tools scare the hell out of me. Ear plugs
do more than protect my ears. Without them I'd probably have a heart attack :)

I've been alone this weekend so got a lot done.
Think I'll call it day and cut the fretboard fret slots tomorrow. Rosewood fretboard.

I'm really liking the look of this.

I just love the Tele shape anyway, so I'm biased.  That's a nicely figured piece of wood too.

The control cover will look fantastic fitted flush in that hole.

I'll bet this one howls like some cat having his arms ripped off by a Wookiee too...

Jon it's going to be cool to see this Zebra with a Sapele back body.
I'm sure looking forward to that...be glad when the wood arrives.

So ya'll know...The picks Grants talking about I had made to give to those I build for....
I didn't know if they were good to use because I've used the same type pick for over 30 years ...what I really like about them- they glow in the dark! LOL.

Twin or not I'm sure looking forward to hearing the difference. One with a maple body
    and one with the Sapele.
I'll be using the same bridge. A full contact Babitz.
The neck woods are different too. More maple on Ophelia and a thinner profile.
The fretboards are different too. Ebony / Rosewood
Grant wanted a thick neck ( like mine).
I'm not going to debate a speed difference when it comes to neck size but I will stand
firm on my opinion that with a nice thicker neck one can play longer more comfortably. Much less hand issues.
I'm thinking they will be very close in tonal range and the pups will be the biggest diff.
I think there will be added warmth, a little, to Wookiees'. But the lows will have a nice brightness and not muddy. Time will tell. ( and Ophelia has very nice crisp lows and one of the most natural bluesiest sounding guitars I've ever played...absolutely a tone monster IMO)  ( luck of the draw I'd say)

    Monday..I'd best get to work.
    Cheers.

Every guitar and bass I've made has had an ebony fingerboard.
It's really nice to see the Rosewood.

I'll be honest....I have no idea how others might measure the depth for these cuts.
Even if I took the time to mark the radius on the board and measured (as I have in the past)
there is no way I can foresee how much wood I'll be sanding off.
I have to sand to satisfaction so sanding to a mark isn't going to work.
So what do I do?  Guess. I take my best guess. I imagine the edge of the board after its been sanded and
cut to width, set the blade height against the board and cut away. So far it's worked for me so I guess it's cool.
Making sure the depth is right for the fret tang after it's sanded to a "finished" state and not cutting to deep  are the main points.
Next step is cut to length (requires cutting at both ends- as you can see the wood that extends past a fender nut ) and profile.

I'll point out , even though I consider every step "critical", that the wood you see where the nut will go-
when I remove that, it's tedious. The reasons being that I do not want the wood to break off. I will file it
down to get an excellent resting place for the nut.
Some may not realize that the nut can be a tone killer and I figure if it kills the tone, it kills everything.
It is paramount that the nut set absolutely flat and square with the fretboard. If it sets flat and is not square
with the fretboard it can ruin the intonation. And then the string slots....if they are not cut right and the strings set to high- when one pushes down the note will more than likely be sounding sharp while they are complaining about how hard it is to barr and F chord or play on the first fret.
If one doesn't want to feel like a nut....LOL   check you nuts LOL ...(sorry)  anyway...purty rosewood all sliced up.

    Edit because of wind.

Mark, I hear ya. I've been taking notes and looking forward to another shot at my idea of a Strat with a Floyd.

Bill....I know there is a line of locals that I've been putting off.
I've been content learning as I build for the ones here.
Not sure what will happen after this build....I need to get my shop built and don't know if I can handle everything
    that I could take on.
I guess things happen as they should. But numbers haven't been involved. :)

    Spacey,

I assume you have a nut slot file?

The kind with smooth sides and a face with teeth?

You must have one or two of those. :-)

Yes I do Mike. Currently three sizes.
And nut string slot files from .010 to .128 (for bass)

It's understandable why most guitarist can't do there own nut work...tools
    are very expensive.
After only two years of gathering tools....I could have opted for another Harley....almost.

I'm still buying files....waiting on one now. It's a new type (for me) to smooth the fret ends.
The one I use is very small and works fine but I want to try a larger one as I think I may have more control with it and a longer stroke. I'll find out.
If one doesn't try different types it would be easy to miss out on the one that is just right.
I know you know what I mean.
