External hardrives? USB and not much else?

Did I miss ESATA?

I have two ESATA drives that never seemed to work with 3 of my computers that have ESATA.

I need to refresh my general backup external drives and am finding that almost everything seems to be USB only these days.

Did I really miss the whole ESATA thing? I've been using fire wire external drives but knew they were disappearing as well.

I imagine that dedicated media drives still have some of the older connections but it seems like general purpose drives don't.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

I have a My BOOK 1TB external with a esata port.  It never seemed to work.  I re-read the motherboard manual to find out a driver needed to be installed to support the Esata port on the motherboard. Once I did that it worked fine.

Thanks. 2 of my systems are factory loaded laptops... and I think the desktop has the ESATA driver.

I wonder how I can figure out what the status is?

I also need to add that I have found that the 3 way, ESATA, firewaire, USB drives I was buying are still around.

I got confused when Best Buys website only listed 1 ESATA drive when using their sort tool. Now I see they have lots of drives that don't show up when you use the sort feature.

    Thanks again.

Seagate are putting out 1TB USB 3.0 external drives with 7200 rpm rotational speeds. That's the way to go. As you said eSATA and firewire are disappearing.

    I don't have any USB 3.0 systems.

    I tried every which way.

I have two Seagate ESATA drives and I tried trouble shooting them and found a bunch of posts on the web with people who had troubles with that drive model.

It just seemed like I hit a dead end with it when I was trying before.

I have hoped I will buy a different model and it will work.

    Hi Mike,

    A couple of things:

The SATA controller needs to be in AHCI mode if you want to be able to "hot-connect" an eSATA HD.
IOW, If you want to be able to turn on the HD (have it recognized) and go.
If the HD controller is in IDE mode, you need to power up the eSATA HD... and reboot the machine.
Upon restarting the HD controller will recognize the eSATA HD.

eSATA cables can be very finicky.  In particular, cheap cables are flakey.

Some external HDs have firmware to puts them to sleep if inactive.  That's particularly annoying (to me)... and can cause issues.

I read somewhere about a small utility you can install which prevents this from happening.
Have you come across this at all?

I have not... but I haven't searched for it.

FWIW, I prefer to assemble "custom" external HDs (using high performance SATA drives with a nice enclosure).
They're faster... and don't go to sleep (unless I power them down)

    Thanks Jim.

I went to look in Device Manager and saw a SATA AHCI controller that seems to be ok, but I didn't see any place to confirm the mode.

    I'm in Windows 7 64bit Home.

I feel as if I should try your step by steps before I do much else...  but it also seems like I tried most of those steps.

My cable is probably a dynex... it was something I got at Best Buy when I tried to do this.

I like your idea of building my own external pack.

    best regards,
    mike

    Hi Mike,

FWIW, My WD external HD is a PITA to use connected via eSATA.
I've had much better luck with newer docking stations and custom assembled externals.

I'm not familiar with that protocol, is that a variant of PATA?

It's best if you're not familiar with the PITA protocol.

Is USB 3 ready for primetime yet?  I've had several BSODs with my latest MOBO and all referred to the USBFILTER.SYS file as the culprit.  The latest firmware and driver update seems to have taken care of it, but I remain suspicious.

USB 3.0 is not yet integrated into Intel chipsets (provided by 3rd party add-on controllers).
This increases the odds for compatibility issues... (liken it somewhat to Firewire chipsets)

Not really. I had to install some sort of utility so that my USB 3.0 port could work with my Western Digital 3.0 external drive.
