How to change volume of a single MIDI clip?
Let's say I have a MIDI file (lets call it song.mid) and I have 3 instances of it in one track, and the track outputs to a single synth. If I want to lower the volume of just ONE of the song.mid instances, how do I do that? Please don't tell me you can't since midi is date, and to bounce the track to audio. Because I can do this exact same task in Reaper easily by putting my mouse on the top portion of the particular clip I want to change the volume for, then drag the volume down. The other two isntances would remain at the same volume, while that one is lower in volume. All 3 clips are in the same track, which still outputs to a single synth. Help???

highlight clip Process>Scale Velocity change both values to the same velocity.

Just curious - why do you have three instances of a midi file in one track? Not saying don't do it, just wondering why you do! Brian

Brian Like if I have a certain synth line in a MIDI file that I want to occur more than once in the song. Or maybe a drum fill. Stuff like that. perfectprint highlight clip Process>Scale Velocity change both values to the same velocity. That did the trick. But is there anywhere that shows what that particular MIDI's current volume is? Like if I do this "scale velocity" several times in my project with tons of different midi clips, how can I keep track of which clips have it, and what level each is at?

I'd move the clip to another track and channel. Velocity is not the same as volume usually.

timidi I'd move the clip to another track and channel. Velocity is not the same as volume usually. That is definitely an option too. Only problem is, wouldn't I need to send the second track through a different output, like a different instance of the synth? When I change settings on the synth, I need that to affect ALL of those clips... I just want the volume to be different between those clips.

i think right clicking or double clicking on a midi note will bring up a details box including its velocity. write a description on the midi clip also to keep track, or change its color.

As mentioned, velocity is not volume. AFAIK there is a way to automate cc7 (MIDI volume) commands, but I've never done it, so I don't know the details, sorry. I suppose there's a reason why you don't want to put a volume envelope on the soft synths audio output track?

Like if I do this "scale velocity" several times in my project with tons of different midi clips, how can I keep track of which clips have it, and what level each is at? Scale Velocity is a destructive edit that changes the velocity values embedded in the individual note events in the clip. To get a non-destructive volume change such as you described in Reaper, you need to create an Automation Envelope to control either MIDI Volume, Audio Volume, or MIDI Velocity. You initially create envelopes in X1 by setting the Edit Filter to that type of envelope. You can create Track envelopes that affect the whole track, or Clip envelopes the affect individual clips. If you create a "Volume" envelope on a MIDI track, it is a CC7 envelope, and controls the audio output level of the synth (i.e. the input level to the track). But you have to split an instrument track to do that, as the default "volume" envelope for an Instrument track is Audio volume, which controls the output level of the track. Be aware that some synths do not respond smoothly to MIDI Volume when it is changed while a note is sounding. And the track envelopes will not automatically have nodes matching clip boundaries, so you'll have to add them yourself, although that's easily done. And you'll have to deliberately bring the envelope back up to the starting level at the end of the affected clip. For MIDI, the only clip envelope you can add is a Velocity offset. If you want the effect of a musician playing the instrument more softly, this is the way to go. And enabling MIDI Velocity envelopes on a track will conveniently create envelopes on every clip with nodes at the clip boundaries, so you can just drag down the line in the clip you want to affect., and leave the others alone.
