help! delay on keypress in record mode

Hello,
First off, I am not a keyboard player, I am a guitar player who uses MIDI for creating drum/bass sequences for recording projects and practice. Previously, I used Cakewalk, going back to the DOS version years ago and always found it simple to use and a great tool for what I want to do.

I purchased SONAR because at the time, it was the only MIDI software that would run reliably on a 64-bit Windows 7 OS. It is WAY overkill for my needs, so apologies in advance if my questions seem overly general and simplistic.

So, the problem I have right now is that when I press a key on my MIDI keyboard when in record mode, there is a delay of around 100ms before I hear the tone generated by the key press, or the event is recorded. This is causing me fits with trying to record a drum track (separate tracks for snare, kick, etc.).

I am using an EMU USB interface on my computer (home built system, ASUS mobo, I7 960 CPU, Win7 64, etc.).
Please note that when I am NOT in record mode, the audio playback from my keyboard through the speakers is NOT delayed (at least, perceptibly) so it seems to be something that happens when SONAR is in record mode only.
Any help/suggestions appreciated.

ALSO (while I am at it), could somebody please point me in the direction of the quantization features in SONAR? That is, being able to time correct (quantize) tracks by various time resolutions (16th note, 32nd note, etc.) Comes in real handy when recording drum sequences (in Cakewalk, I was able to use this to create ridiculously tight renditions of drum parts for songs I was working out guitar arrangements for).

THANKS,
Chris

If you search the forums you would be able to find a lot of questions like yours that have been solved. Iv'e seen and helped answer some of these question myself. It's best to search the forums first then create a new thread of your own if you can't find it in the forums or if it did not solve your problem.

A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths.

Which Sonar version are you using? What model EMU audio interface are you using?

Sorry, I'm heading out the door for my wife's doctors appointment. Can't go into details but do a search in this forum for latency issues. Crucial to know, as Chappel pointed out, we need to know what version of Sonar and what model interface. You should find plenty of responses. In the meantime, I have better results using the ASIO driver. Check the settings in Preferences/Audio. Also try using the DPC button in the toolbar while recording. Be sure to turn it off when you are through recording or else the playback will be out of sync. Try those and I will check back in about 2 hours and see if there has been any help. A lot of us have found out that using a certain plugin can also cause this problem. Try removing the plugins one at a time to see if it may be that. Good Luck! I will check later.
