CPU Stress test oddities?

So I m checking out Z3TA,quite amazing the OB8 is good however, the more complex the sound the more the CPU meter in X1 spikes, normal? Im getting an incredible 2.5ms RTLatency using my on board realtek with the ASIO4all wrapper[playing only,no inputs]great sound considering[XPS L502x Laptop w/ JBL [?] teensy speakers but with a teensy subwoofer, i7 2630QM,8GB RAM 750HDD,Win7 x64]but,if I push it, too much polyphony[ten fingers, not really needed due to the density of sound] The cpu [only one line meaning one core?]can spike to red and the sound stops[little box appears says audio engine stopped]I can get it going again pretty easily, and stop it from happening by raising the buffer OR lowering the oversampling[?] in the Z3TA options[1.0/ .9/ .8/ .7 etc].Heres the weird thing then as a test, I bounced a 3rd party soft synth[SCI Organized] to a track, added a  sonitus delay,THEN cloned the track 148 TIMES! e.g. 149 tracks, turned the master RIGHT down and it played PERFECTLY!The cpu read LESS than just the Z3ta on its own!???Im also aware that in Task manager[W7] HALF the cores were still parked! To make it more confusing Ive read that Sandy Bridge chips need the TURBO/Core Parking enabled, especially as this CPU is only 2GHz and TURBOs to 2.9[X1 requires 2.6GHZ?]The whole thing is, computer recording seems to require so much knowledge/tweaking of systems that music sometimes takes a back seat! Cheers RK. P.s. I do use proper monitors/extra screens usually.

Raise the buffer or lower the oversampling then.  Using all 8 cores won't make it run any faster if it is already exhausting the audio buffer with just one core active.  It also makes sense that all 8 cores wake up when you are running 150 audio tracks.

Check the latency of your card using a loopback cable to get the REAL roundtrip time A4A adds a 4ms offset as a default before it even does anything so your figures there are likely optimistic.  I'm not saying it's a bad thing to use the Realtek ITB but try it without A4A also and see if it works any better.

Better to get a system working smoothly for your practical purposes rather than set up a competition in your mind against some abstract figures you've heard around the 'net.

If it comes to it I believe you can turn off core parking but I've never come across the need to.

Hi,Yeah I thought  it should definately use all cores with those tracks!? Its almost[Realtek/WDM/WASAPI and MME is totally]"Unusable" without A4all,Im sure its optimistic [the reading] but thats what Sonar Preferences says[2.5ms]Not the asio4all box.And yes if you go into "Regedit" and change a text of "Min value" Max Value" from 64[default] to 0 it turns off parking but it also dissables turbo[stuck at 2GHz max]As far as the "they must be enabled" is from a post from Scott from ADK in regards to "C-states"AS I said the latency was Without the input,A4a mentions it in the info PDF and it works, for just playing/listening.I just thought that with that many tracks and NO drop outs et al the performance should be better for the synth.different animals I guess?Ill try the loop thing you described, you obviously mean Laptop mic in to headphone/audio out?
The whole bad result with my UA-25EX USB interface has been a real dissapointment and I read that PCi[e?] is really the way to go,especially as firewire is getting difficult with the latest motherboards etc etc and this Laptop NOT Having either FW or Express card.Anyway thanks for the tip! RK.

No I meant line out to line in.

There was some software gizmo that measured it on the fly I can't remember what it was called though, but it's easy to do with something like Audacity which doesn't have built-in latency compensation trickery going on under the hood.

Just set up a sample to send out some peaks out from it and record them at the same time the difference in samples between the played peaks and newly recorded ones will give you the true round trip time.

Sure use A4All if you are getting better performance from it than the native driver.

And aside from the lack of decent inputs newer on-board chips now outperform some of these older lower end 'prosumer' interfaces that haven't seen a hardware engineer since the beginning of the century.  IOW for mixing in the box you are hardly likely to notice any difference in sound quality.
