Registry Cleaner and Windows Update
I downloaded Eusing Registry Cleaner and used it. Now I get a error message from windows update saying 643 and something to do with Net Framework. Also, the new updates popup keeps reappearing over and over and when I try again the same error message occurs. whoa is me! P.S. does anyone know where I can get a defragmenter that doesn't take 6 hours. Thank you for your support!

Don't believe anything I say... but if you think that the registry cleaner whacked something it may actually be time to use Windows system restore and then resume with Windows updates. I use CC Cleaner very frequently and have never had a problem. Did you have a problem before that you were trying to fix with the cleaner you used? best regards, mike

I use the Iobit's SmartDefrag utility which is very quick, nice GUI, and it's FREE and included in the Advanced System Care link below. I actually use most of the Free utilities by Iobit (Advanced System Care) as it does a very good job and also keeps a restore point in case something goes wrong. http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html With this & Microsoft's Security Essentials, my PC has been quite effiecient/virus free.

I like to simply highlight the registry and select delete ...that cleans it up nicely I use the Glarysoft utilities. http://www.glarysoft.com/ They seem to work just fine in finding and fixing registry errors. So far so good anyway. They have a number of utilities that I use including the DiskSpeedup defragger. It takes a few minutes but nothing close to 6 hours. (10 or 15 depending on disk size and fragmentation) Anytime you "edit" the registry, it's always a good idea to back it up to a unique location with an easy to remember name, in case something goes wrong. A registry is critical.... but who ever thinks to back it up before editing it? IIRC, the Glary soft utilitles do a back up so the "fixes" are reversible if need be. EDIT: before you throw in the towel, have you tried a system restore back a few days? That has saved my butt more than once.

+1 for CC Cleaner. +2, never ever had a problem with it. If you are on Windows 7 a daily scheduled defrag with the standard Windows defragger is the way to go. Set it and forget it.

I also use Glary Utilities for both once a week maintenance as well as optimizing what's loaded on start-up and defragging the registry. I then use Power Defragmentor GUI for defragging my harddisks (which opens a DOS window when it runs so it's quicker than the usual defrags). Haven't had any issues with either.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

also by the london based / none cockney folk who make ccleaner... http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler but ccleaner should be fine.. with regard to defrag it shouldn't take that long , are you sure there isn't something on your machine thats affecting it ? either that or a duff drive amongst other things. run the "cleaner" tab first.. see how much crud it removes.... and use treesize free to show bloat area's on your drive.. http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/ , you might find files are misreported size wise or temp files filling up your drive.

Thanks everyone for the input!!! I had corrupt files in the net framework. Greg, I had to have microsoft go in my files and reinstall the net framework files. It took all afternoon to do it. They're going to go back tomorrow to finish. So thank you for the link!

You're welcome. I am usually lost when the gurus here start talking about computers and how they work, but I binged 643 and that kinda looked like what you needed. I just happened to be first. Make music! Have fun! Have some chili and ice cream!
