Rock ended up in an embarrassingly hair metal self-induced coma via autoeroticism asphyxiation during the mid to late 80’s only to be (thankfully) revived by the 90’s Seattle / alternative scene. … can’t relate to rap or hip-hop so it’s not for me to pass judgment … but, the one thing I really don’t understand is why Grandmaster Flash, Blondie and Run-D.M.C. are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (I don’t have anything against these artists) but Rush, ELP and Yes are not???? (went there for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago)

PUBA Why are you classifying Rap as music? QE is right in a way. In my mind 3 things killed Rock. 3) Aything by Journey. That was the death of album oriented rock and the birth of corporate rock 2) the transition of Genesis from a cool prog rock band to a horrible disco act that was on every station every day with stuff like Su Su Sudio 1) We Built This City on Rock and Roll. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh is not bad enough. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

I wondered the same thing, Q. At first, I thought it was due to political conflicts or input from Label Executives. I finally came to realize, though, that it's because the petty tyrants at the Hall of Fame can't follow odd time signatures. When they try to dance to it, they look stupid(er). As we all know, that is the single most important element in determining whether or not music is good.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh is not bad enough. I just threw up in my mouth a little. My opinions (just so no one gets personally offended ). On Space Cowboy's observations: I have nothing good to say about Rap so I won't say anything about it. (or did I?) 3) I never considered Journey "Rock" so I simply enjoyed them as another genre 2) I liked early Genesis and later Genesis, but treated them as two different bands and, for the record, they never recorded Sussudio, that was a Phil Collins solo production 1) Even prior members of what used to be Jefferson Airplane and, later, Jefferson Starship get sick when they hear that song (done by the final encarnation "Starship") As for me personally, I tend to bounce between many moods musically some of which make even me choke when I think about them while I'm in a different mood! (I'm a simple person who has complicated moments. ) I know lots of people (and, I believe, there are several in this forum) who are quite happy sticking with one, fairly well defined, genre of music. In one sense I'm sure it's a HELL of a lot cheaper, but I would get tired of it pretty quick (sucks being ADHD sometimes!). What I'm leading up to is the BIG question that gets asked a lot: What, exactly, constitutes "Rock" (or any other genre) anyway? Well, I'm neither looking for answers nor am I going to try and promote my opinion of what it is. Instead, I sat down a few years back with a list of all my songs at that time and tried to figure out what genre and grouping "I" considered each song and/or artist to be in. After several refinements and regroupings, I ended up with a relatively small number of basic genres with groupings within each. The criteria for the groupings within a genre was anything but technical, I simply answered the question "Which songs from this genre sound good together?" Works for me anyway.

My "genre," if you will, is pretty well expressed by the Sirius-XM channel "Classic Rewind." Beyond that, I try to avoid specifics - just turn up the volume when something I like is played!

Be very careful. Some would tell you to play "Jane" to drive that out of your head, but that can backfire on you. You've got to treat this situation with extreme caution. Whatever happens, whatever else you hear, whatever else may run rabid through your feverish brain, do not think about the Jefferson Starship performance on the Star Wars Holiday Special. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Wars_Holiday_Special I hope that helps.
