Audio settings
Yes, it's very odd because I've been making music with Cakewalk software for ages, but while installing my new computer, I was setting up the audio options the way I am used to but suddenly thought: shouldn't this be changed somehow...? I've been using certain settings for a long time, but now I've got a new computer, maybe I should also change some settings in there...? The Playback and Record I/O Buffer Size, for instance (on the Advanced tab). I have it at 128 but noticed it was at 256 at default... And should I change anything manually on the Driver Profiles page...? I have a Edirol FA-66 and use Windows 7 64 bit. And btw the Buffer Size on the General tab can only be set to 9 or 18 and higher. I used to be able to set this up in smaller steps, if I remember well. Maybe this is due to me not being able to find the following control panel: I remember setting WDM to smaller on my previous computer but I really can't find that control panel anymore... Should it still be there somewhere on my Windows 7 64 bit pc...? Maybe this one is still at Normal and I don't know how to change it... EDIT Why doesn't the forum software accept my hard returns...? The post looks like a mess now... Sorry, can't do anything about it...!

I'm not exactly sure what your question is. are you wanting to change the buffer size but not sure if you should? if that's your question then just try it and see if it works OK. if not, change it back.

Hehehe, sorry for being not clear. I don't WANT to change things but I wonder if I SHOULD... I've been using specific settings for a long time and I wonder myself where those settings originated from and if I shouldn't be using other settings right now, with my new pc and so on. Is running the Wave profiler enough to set things up or should you really manually edit and test each and every setting...? Years ago I took some screenshots of the settings in Sonar and I've been copying those without really thinking about it. Just now I thought this might be a bit odd and not a wise thing to do, but I don't really know what are settings are for and which ones should be changed or not... I am curious (for instance) if everyone here evaluates and/or changes their settings once a year or so, or do you leave things at default? EDIT This forum doesn't accept my hard returns...??? Is there something wrong somewhere with the forum software or is it me...?

not sure why you're not allowed to do hard returns - I don't see anyone else having problems with it. which browser are you using? as far as your settings - you only need low latency if you are monitoring something on the comptuer while recording - such as using Guitar Rig or Amplitude while you're recording your guitar but you want to hear the FX while you're recording. same for keyboards. if you're using a softsynth to record MIDI with then you need low latency. if you monitor everything OUTSIDE the computer then you don't need low latency during recording. so if you need low latency, then try a lower setting and see what happens. if you don't and everything's working fine for you - don't worry about it.

I've always used the default settings more or less. As Beagle say's if you are not having issues then don't worry about it. Sonar seems to do a good job of setting defaults. So your saying by depressing "enter" you get posted? Must be your browser.

Ok, then I'll leave all (buffer)settings at deault. Yo have to enable the 64 precision mode though and 24 bit and all that. It's not that you son't have to change nothing at all! (I wasnt only talking about latency.) Let's see if the hard returns do work on this computer (I am on a Mac now, usually I type here using Firefox on Windows 7...) Yes, it works! Odd. Must be Firefox then...

Ya some versions of Firefox are buggy these days. I just upgraded to 6 but will roll back to 3.6 which for me was the last one that seemed to work. My set up defaulted to 24 bit. I'm not sure how that decision is made by Sonar. I always thought it was the drivers for the Audio interface default. If you install them and check the control panel even before installing Sonar mine goes for 24 bit. ( M-Audio fast track and the Tascam us1641)

I have a similar issue here. In March I put together a new computer with the fastest CPU you could buy... For some reason I never bothered with the default settings until last night. So I set the buffer down to as low as it will go and also lowered the playback buffers. I am running Windows XP 32 bit with an echo GINA 3G; Intel i7-2600K @3.4 GHz The input from my moog is still slow. So so I have had to move the sound back 1/16 after recording because it was then too soon. What gives?

are you using the gina for input AND output? or are you using your onboard soundcard for output? if so that will cause problems. check here for your master devices: OPTIONS>AUDIO RECORDING and PLAYBACK DEVICES - make sure they both are set to the GINA

I have reported the Bug to them ( Firefox) and they are working on it, Gear Sluts forum is also not working. I hate upgrades! Can't we be left in peace for a couple of years!

The playing through SONAR is instantaneous, only when I have midi track play my moog do I get the delay. I reset the MIDI buffers to 500 last night on the advice of another thread, but I am pretty sure that is where the problem lays.
