Turning Stylus RMX into midi/audio clips?
Well I've tried everything I can think of and I can't figure out how to make Track view audio clips out of the 8 layers I've constructed in Stylus (so I can use them in the Matrix). Do any of you have this app and know what I'm talking about? I also wish I knew how to trigger Stylus from the Sonar play button instead of having to time it from the Stylus play button...but I can't. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi there, there's a couple of ways to do this, either simply freezing the synth, or bouncing down without freezing. Assuming you have 8 midi tracks, each pointing to one of 8 Audio tracks that are assigned to RMX, and that in the mixer tab of RMX you've assigned each of the mixer channels to the corresponding audio track - eg: Mixer channel 1 -> Out A, Mixer channel 2 -> Out B, channel 3 -> Out C etc. so the audio for each layer (channel) will be on a separate track. Option 1) Freeze the synth, then you can drag the audio to new tracks if you want. Then you have to unfreeze the synth if you want to use it again (or add another instance). Option 2) "Bounce to Tracks" (without freezing). In the Track View, do the following. 1) Select all the midi and the corresponding audio tracks - so for 8 layers you'll need to select 16 tracks. 2) Click the "Tracks" drop down tab in the Track View header, and click on "Bounce to Tracks". 3) In the "Bounce to Tracks" dialog that pops up, go to the "Source Category" and select "Tracks" as the source. The 8 audio tracks for RMX should appear in the "Source Busses/Tracks list. They should be highlighted in the list - leave them highlighted, you can deselect/select them just by clicking on them. 4) Set any other options eg: 64 bit Engine, Track Automation etc. 5) Check the Destination - should default to "New Track". If not, click on the dow arrow and select "New Track" as the destination. 6) Click OK - Sonar will bounce them down and create 8 new audio tracks with the RMX audio output. From there, you can do what you want with them :-) Good luck. Cheers - Cliff

That didn't do it, but I figured it out. It takes a little extra work, and there are a few extra steps, and I just got done with it, so I will post the exact instructions in a few minutes...break time now. But hey - this is GOOD!

relpomiraculous That didn't do it... Well, but that Does do the "it" in question - it's MIDI 101, simple rendering of a MIDI track to audio. Using "old fashioned" separate MIDI tracks and synth-audio tracks makes it more clear - Select MIDI track and associated audio track, bounce. It's so easy. I saw the other thread that was revived about this, and followed the link to your new thread, relpom - I'm sure what you came up with will be interesting, but I'm just saying that Cliffr described the basic and super simple routine perfectly in his post above. You are talking about a regular soft synth, or a track that has a midi clip already in it. Yes, that would be sufficient to bounce the tracks to audio...but if you have built your drum layers within Stylus itself, I found that none of the above advice works - because there is no midi data in Sonar to begin with. So let's say you have Stylus, with 8 groves in its mixer, and blank Stylus audio and midi tracks in Sonar. How do you get an audio file from that? Well, first, you have to get those 8 groves out of Stylus and into Sonar, one by one. And THAT is where the fun starts... This is so convoluted I know you must be thinking there is something wrong with me...but start with your Stylus loaded with 8 grooves and just a simply instrument track in Sonar: First: System Specs on this machine: WinXP SP3 - AMD Opteron 180 - Sonar X1c (I have yet to try this on my second computer with Win7 64 bit Core i7 Sonar X1c and it could be that these steps I am about to list are needed only for my old machine - and I can confirm that compared to my new computer the old one is buggy as hell.) Now, here is how I got those 8 "grooves" into Sonar: 1. Make sure you are on the Stylus browser pane. Click on the button for track 1. Open the Step Sequencer. Drag the file in the Drag and Drop window in Stylus onto the Step Sequencer, not into track pane in Sonar. The clip will appear in a new Sonar Track. Close the Step Sequencer. 2. Do this for each of the 8 (or less) tracks in Stylus which contains a groove. 3. Make the appropriate output settings in each track for Stylus tracks 1-8. 4. Leave all Stylus tracks in the Mixer pane on Output A. Do not use B-H. You may find that as you go from Stylus tracks 2-8 that dragging the files from the drag and drop in Stylus without using the Step Sequencer creates extra empty tracks equal to the number of the Stylus track itself - for instance dragging the file that is in Track 8 will create 8 new tracks in Sonar, not just one. One with the file, and 7 that are empty. Using the Step Sequencer eliminates that problem. Once the tracks were all in Sonar, it was a snap to change then all into midi groove clips. But I noticed that none of the clips was a Step Sequencer clip. Even though I had inserted them all using it. But looking at the midi events themselves in each clip, it is clear that these are not normal midi events, but are special to Stylus. So the Step Sequencer would be useless anyway for any kind of midi event editing, as would be the piano roll. So Stylus really is it's own kind of animal, and this is why this thread may be necessary for the next poor chap who comes along...good luck to us all.

Hi, Relpomiraculous - Thanks for the big post on Stylus. I got curious and went to their site to check it out. Highly spiffin' unit, that is. And now that I've read your new post, I'm not sure why you're doing this complicated routine you've described --You're not trying to edit the MIDI data from Stylus, you're just trying to get audio from Stylus into Sonar, isn't that right? Like any multi-timbral synth/sampler/loop machine, Stylus has separate audio outputs. After watching the introductory video tutorial covering Stylus basics, I watched this one showing the mixer in Stylus being used in combination with the mixer in Pro Tools. You usually want to bring a synth's separate audio outs into Sonar so you can work with Sonar's plugins, and to do your final mixing. Here's that tute in case you haven't seen it: http://www.spectrasonics....=3&VideoTypeID=all That's the way the program was designed - Isn't that accomplishing what you want?-- Randy B.

I agree with Randy, you're over-thinking it a bit, there is no reason to need to use the Step Sequencer. The simplest way to get audio out of Stylus is to drag the MIDI clip that you want from Stylus to the Instrument track (or MIDI track) that was created when Stylus was added to the project. Once you have the MIDI clip triggering Stylus, instead of Stylus playing the part, simply freeze Stylus and then drag the audio to a new track. Personally I like to drag/park the clips in the Matrix view, that way I don't need to create additional tracks. Once you've moved the audio to another track unfreeze Stylus, delete the MIDI clip that you previously converted and repeat the process for each additional part in Stylus. -e.B

Those are both great tips, and I never would have thought of either...I was stuck thinking Stylus was a midi instrument instead of an audio one. Thanks so much guys.

Wow - it is so much easier just "inserting" Stylus at the outset with all outputs enabled instead of just a simple instrument track, and *then* assigning Stylus audio outs A in the mixer to A-H. That was my big mistake - inserting as a simple instrument track - instead of creating at the outset all 8 outputs plus one midi track like in the video. The drag and drop thing even in my new machine creates extra empty tracks no matter what I do, and I wonder why this is happening - but I think your way is so much better - forget drag and drop, eliminate the midi files altogether and get right to the audio. Then Matrix is ready to go. Thanks so much guys. I'm getting better at it each day...

That's great, relp - Much better. Simple instrument tracks can be OK, but they really make things more confusing, imho. Stylus has so much it can do inside the program, adding layers from different files - it's really doing the MIDI work for you. Sounds like you're going good now. Thanks for letting us know. Randy B.

Hi Relpomiraculous, sorry, I hadn't realised you didn't have midi in your RMX tracks - I took you saying "constructed" as if you'd already got to that point - re-reading I see what you mean ... "inside the mixer". Randy set you in the right direction though, and it looks like you've pretty much got things sorted. Simple instrument tracks really don't cut it - I set up RMX the way I want it, eg: Outputs all set to separate audio tracks, and my 8 midi tracks- one for each channel, all in a folder and then save this as a "Track Template". Then instead of using the "Insert Soft Synth" and having to add the extra mid tracks, I just load the track template and everything is all set up ready to go. Regarding the "Drag'n Droppping Midi" from RMX, the key here is to always drop the midi data to the First Midi track ... the midi will go to the correct track automatically. That's how RMX works, and it's explained in their tutorial vids. Just always drop midi to midi track #1 and you won't go wrong. Like the others say, check those tutorial vids, they've got quite a few, and they're really good. Best wishes - Cliff

My basic blank Sonar template has RMX already loaded. Each of the 8 RMX channels has its own audio track in Sonar. (and midi track too). To convert RMX midi to audio, just freeze the track you need. The only limit RMX has (imho) is its small number of channels, only 8. But by freezing tracks in Sonar, and deleting the redundant midi, you free up precious RMX channels. Because the process of freezing is relatively quick, this is not a time-consuming chore - it only takes two mouse-clicks to freeze a track. I converted all my Beatscape loops into rex files, which I imported in RMX, so I could work with 12 or 20 percussion tracks. RMX rocks, and I wish Cakewalk would follow the Spectrasonics example by making all the Sonar training videos free. Shall we start a campaign? :)
