A couple of demos

I've recently joined the forum.

I've got some demos of my songs, but I'm afraid they are homemade and unpolished. Here are a couple of contrasting tracks in case they are of any interest.

By The Water - this is a gentle, melancholy song (I need to make the vocals less boomy - I think this is partly a problem of trying to use headphones when mixing).

Malcom:

By the Water:  Wow, very cool vibe to this one.  I love the guitars and the vox.  The drums need to come up more, they are low and really don't sound like they are the in the same space as the rest of the tracks.  In my ears they sound like they are not spread enough in the stereo field.  Also the guitar lead is a little loud and could be pulled back a  hair.  I am not a very good mixer myself but I think you have a really good tune hear and I would say it is beyond the demo stage.  Just some more mixing and you'd have a polished tune to my ear.

Nice tune.

Skyline:  I am having some trouble listening to this one.  Will have to try back later.  It cuts off after about 40 seconds or so.  Sounds cool though, the little bit I heard.

I like the tune By The Water..... mixing with headphones is not the easiest thing to do.

Nice guitar tone. I like the melancholy feel to this tune. The drums are not needed..... they are a distraction. I'd take them out totally.

Bring the guitar down a few db and I think it will fit better.

Thanks very much for your kind comments.

I'm afraid the drums were just recorded (in a completely different space to the rest of the track) on a single vocal mic held near the snare. Not an ideal drum recording set-up I admit.

Sorry there were problems getting the electronica track to work. It seemed OK when I tried just now, but if the problem persists let me know.

I very much appreciate you having taken the trouble to listen to my demos and provided feedback.

By the Water - I really liked this. I'd bring the vox up slightly, back the lead of a bit and bring the drums up a bit too if it were mine, but I enjoyed listening as it is.

Skyline - Doesn't play without having to join Facebook so can't help you there.

I listened to "By The Water".   Nice song.  I like your singing (harmony was excellent).  Not sure but on these little speakers it sounded like the lead guitar was fighting for center stage with vocals in spots.

Thanks very much for all this extremely helpful feedback.

(Regarding the version of Skyline that only plays a short clip unless you are connected on facebook or the mailing list, there should also be another version on the site which isn't for download, but streams the whole things).

Best wishes,

Malcolm

Hey Malcolm you know i love By The Water! really is a very very cool song. only thing i wold change is the drums, which just sound like an afterthought. i don't know if a normal drum kit would work, or some percussion like SMB use (btw check out Slow Marching Band - SMB - you'll love them - song on this forum now!) but the fragility of the voice against the piano, and the glorious solo...perfick!

Thanks so much for all the encouragement and advice. Some people mentioned a problem getting skyline to work. I've got a version of some of my songs (including Skyline and By The Water, and also something my 5 year old did with me as a school project called Pig Going Waa) at

The videos are just bits of chopped up public domain footage.

Best wishes,
