3 drive solution, samples on 3rd drive?

I read that to conquer sputtering while recording it's best to have your programs and OS on one drive, your project files on another, and your sample files on another (that's 3 drives). Does anyone know what soft synth/samples folders you need to move to a separate drive and how you tell Sonar about the new location? Thanks.

yes, that will help, but it's not the first line of defense you should worry about.

what soundcard do you have?  which operating system?  computer specs?

if you're having "sputtering" while recording then 90% of the time the problem is usually with the soundcard, drivers and the latency buffers.  tell us about that first so we know if that's where to look first.

      I have a Tascam US-122 usb soundcard. I'm running X1 on a 2.66quad with 2G ram under winXP.

My guess is a upgrade to Windows 7 and more RAM will do more for you than 3 drives. Not all computers can deal with streaming to 3 drives anyways, there's more to it.
To answer your question, soft synth themselves stay put with sonar, but the sample library's can easily be moved. The pathways can be changed in global options for most. Some are a little more involved and the plug in itself might need to be re-installed and directed to the "3rd" drive.

2G of RAM is pretty low for win7.

but what are your buffers set to?  OPTIONS>AUDIO>

and what driver mode are you using?

    and which version of sonar?

I'm running X1 on XP. Using WDM driver.
I had the buffers set at 256 but just increased to 1024 and it helps, maybe even fixed it, we'll see. How high should I go with buffers? Is there a downside to setting it too high?

The problem stutter started when I changed the bit driver depth from 16 to 24. I don't get an error when I use 24. So I assume my Tascam can handle 24. If I use 16, does that mean I'm no longer recording at 24 bits? Elsewhere it says recording is 24 bit, but it's the bit driver thing that was set to 16, which I changed to 24 and I started getting the dropouts.

Open the Tascam control panel and see what it is set to. Have you checked your latency with the dpclat meter? You should be able to record at 24 bit, Not sure if X1 likes that low a RAM, you should post on the X1 forum anyway, this is for the older versions. ( untoggle the italics after copy / pasting )

yes, if you choose 16 then you're recording at 16, not 24 and it's not the best to do that, use 24 if you can.

1024 buffers is OK as long as you're not trying to monitor while recording.  in other words if you are using a softsynth to listen while you record or if you are using a guitar amp sim to listen while you record, etc.  if you monitor outside the computer then high buffers is OK.
