4k compressor question

Hi guys,

I'm just curious if any of you have noticed this at all when using the PC 4k compressor....the ratio seems backwards to me. With every compressor I have ever used, the more ratio I use, the more the compressor reacts. This thing is backwards. At a 10:1 ratio, it gives me LESS compression than it does at 2:1. Can anyone else confirm this? Thanks.

yeah, I've noticed this too. I don't read the numbers with that one, I just turn the knob the wrong way

This is actually how it should perform. It's not that it's compressing more at lower ratios, the knee is changing as well with the ratio setting. It kicks in sooner with lower ratios. Lower Ratio = softer knee.

so you are saying that the ratio also changes the knee AND the threshold, or the point at which it begins compressing the signal.

I can confirm on my end that my other 4k comp does this exact thing. Wow, I never noticed this before. So they are supposed to behave like this.....all this time, I never knew. I happened to be working on a project where I just wanted to remove about -2dB of gain. When I moved the ratio to 10, I noticed I had LESS compression than when I was at 2. Try it and you'll see what I mean. I'm literally removing less gain while using a 10:1 ratio. But I guess that's how these particular compressors are supposed to work. This just struck me as odd and I can't believe I never noticed this before.

Eric, in those graphs you posted up, from top to bottom are they in order...2, 4, 10? If so, there's no way that last one is 10 bro...the compressor opens up for me at 10 and the gain reduction drops. I should get more gain reduction going to 10...unless that 10 means 10 and not 10:1 and goes in reverse instead?
