X1 and Vocaloid
I've been itching for a while to try Vocaloid to add some additional background vocals (i.e., other than me) - I read that it's supposed to NOT work correctly with Sonar - Is that still the case with x1? Anyone tried/using it?

I have no confidence that Vocaloid will sound any good at all. I think there are better solutions for adding harmony vocals. Look at Antares or TC-Helicon for some decent products.

yup - with little help of soldering iron you can do line-to-mic adapter and use GREAT hardware from TC Helicon: Harmony G XT, Harmony M XT, Live Touch.
I have first one, and do the harmonies using only audio - it has so good chord recogniton, that I don't need MIDI for "giving" chords to make harmonies.
And - I thik this little boxes are much better than even Antares Harmony. More natral, harmony follows your voice etc.

Thanks for the replies - I am not having problems generating BV harmonies per se - I just sing them and then clean them up with V-Vocal or Melodyne. Using the formant controls plus some additional processing, I can "transform" the voice a bit, but they really are still "me." I also have a Vocalist (that I've used live with MIDI control). However, I wanted something to make really different voices. The Vocaloid voices don't sound really natural when exposed but buried a bit with my own BVs they might lend the feel of perhaps additional female singers. Ideally I would just get some other singers to lend the occasional voice, but that has been a real PITA to coordinate. I had thought about some like the Antares THROAT modeler for this. I'd read that Mike Oldfield uses Vocaloid for non-exposed BVs, so I'd wondered if anyone hear had tried it - It is a lot of work from what I've read and there is the issue about it playing nice with Sonar

[ The topmost issue you will find with Vocaloid and Sonar is Rewire. With this, first of all as you are aware, this requires Sonar 32 to Rewire. Then, even that, it still does not Rewire as straightforward in 32 bit. It can also be used as a VST, and this too does not play nicely with Sonar. So here is a cool trick of getting the best of it with Sonar. Use it standalone! As you allude to, using it for BV, your phrases won’t be too long. You may also play the midi part in Sonar (monophonic on a wind patch) then export and import the midi file into standalone. Write your words over the midi notes. In all I find it just easier to sing and write the parts directly. When done Vocaloid standalone, make a wav of the part, and then import that wav into Sonar. You can now do all kinds of stuff with it in Sonar. V-Vocal for formants etc. Add FX’s like chorus-the list goes on. If you want to use the Rewire of Vocaloid, here is a tutorial which shows how to work around the quirkiness.

Vocaloid 3 is supposed to be available at the end of September. It's expected to have better sounding voices, although I suspect the improvements will be minor at best. Compatible with Win7. Unknown if it will have improved VST compatibility to work better with Sonar. http://vocaloid.wikia.com/wiki/Vocaloid3

I use a TC Helicon Voice Works Plus. It works great with some people's voices, not well at all with others. Although you can alter the voice, the short answer is that the harmonies will either sound like you, or they will sound weird. I have had no luck transforming the vocals except as a special effect. You probably know this already, but I highly recommend that if you do use TC or something similar, you control it with MIDI notes instead of setting it on chord or scale so it doesn't jump around. I have a Digitech Vocalist table-top model I will sell you cheap. Nothing wrong with it but I use the TC now. Both are awesome for doubling and decent for harmonies. Vocaloid is interesting but I would not put it on a record. Might be good for sci-fi film or gaming. Anyone here use an Eventide Harmonizer lately? I have used them in other studios but never owned one. OK, guys but what with the simplest way?
There are several services on net with free or almost free vocal phrases which are recorded by real people.
Some friends of my - producers - especially dance/club producers - can't sing at all and they just find and cooperate with singers to get the result. Usually people don't want big money or don't want money at all, cooperation is "virtual" and (it's maybe the hard way) if you find a voice you wanted - then everything starts to flow.
In my country - Poland - we have www dedicated to musicians, vocalists, producers and bands, when you can log in, put your description and put your "wishlist" - who are you looking for.
When I was looking for female vocalist for live performances - I get more than 10 e-mails just from "30-mins by car" area. Some of them were amateurs, some of them - very nice and well trained voices.
Don't you have similar service?

OK, so ity sounds like the TC Helicons aren't much of an answer for sounding like someone different (but normal). I've got a desktop Digitech Vocalist, and like I said, found it fine for live harmonies (with MIDI input from the sequencer) but for recorded doubling or "me" harmonies.
Anyone try Antares Throat or Sonivox Vocalizer for transformation?
I'll probably give one of the vocaloids a shot just to satify myself. Taken from the above and other reading. The best strategy might be to sing the part, optiomize it into the right notes and then generate a MIDI file to use to drive Vocaloid.
