i'm Thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 -
about a year ago i had a desktop built to use as a dedicated DAW. I ended up choosing xp because i knew it to be a fairly stable OS. I'm thinking of upgrading but need some advice. Also, would i be able to use the 64 bit option with windows 7? another question would be if i decide to upgrade, is it recommended to order the discs or to download? i've heard stuff about combo packs or updates? would i start off from a clean slate and do a clean install? i'm a better musician than technician so any help is appreciated. * also wondering if windows 7 will recognize works already in progress.

your head'd in the right direction : have win 7 chipset drivers ready from giga support
and new video drivers , was seemless here 0errors..never looking
back ..
also wondering if windows 7 will recognize works already in progress.
yes: you open the song and right away save it with a new name

also i runn xp and win7 each has a os drive and a data drive
runns fine

My understanding is that you cannot upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 -- you can only do a complete new install of Windows 7 on top of XP. In other words, the Windows 7 upgrade installer verifies that you have an XP installation to upgrade, then wipes it clean and installs W7. You then have to restore all your files and reinstall all your applications.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to Vista and then upgrade again to Win7--provided that you don't want to go from a 32-bit to a 64-bit installation.

Yes, Windows 7 will be a clean install but it will save your old windows folder. You can get 32bit version or 64bit. Also don't think so you can download it, it's too big. Get a DVD package, good to have a copy anyway. Anyway good decision, Windows 7 is the best Windows OS so far, and who know maybe even not only Windows...

I'd recommend ordering the disk then doing a clean install rather than even attempting an upgrade install from any previous version.
If you can run to it and you need the extra disk space it may be a good time to add an extra drive and install W7 afresh on that, you'll at least know that all your old data is all intact on the old boot drive/partition should you forget to back something up.

I agree with the people saying get the DVD version. Much less painful for re-installs if you need them, and much more friendly if your not a techy type; just stick the disc in and go. Some other tips: - You'll get two discs, one of the 32 bit version, and one of the 64. Your processor is 64 bit, so I can't think of any reason not to install that version of Windows
- You can install both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Sonar side by side on 64 bit Win 7. The Sonar installer asks you which you want. Just install twice and do both. Also make sure you do this with any instruments and effects that offer the option.
- The vast majority of compaitibility issues with old projects can be resolved by simply running them in the 32 bit version of Sonar, which is the point of the above.
- Windows 7 has no bearing on whether your projects will be recognised or not, that's down to the Sonar installation.
- DO expect to spend some time getting everything set up to run smoothly. Windows itself is no problem, and niether is Sonar really, but making sure you've got all your old plug ins installed and Sonar knows where they are can take a while.
- Different people have different views on this, but: I went through the colossal hassle of setting up a dual boot machine in case I wanted to use my old XP installation for anything. Took forever, was really complex, and I never had cause to use it once in the year before I got rid of it. My advice is not to bother.
- If you do have some esoteric thing that only works in XP, there's a free XP compatibility mode add-on to download (users of Win 7 Pro and up only, but you should be getting Pro anyway).

If you decide to go with Windows 7 (which I think is a good move it is a much better Microsoft OS) and you can afford it, I'd suggest getting a new PC from someone who does DAW PCs as their business in your case. I don't own or work for any of the DAW PC builders.
As you stated, you are a musician not a technician, so getting someone who does that for a living to do it for you is the best route. Saves you the heartaches of figuring it all out. You can carefully migrate over all of your current setup on to the Windows 7 machine with this scenario.
Now, I've built my own PCs for many years now and it isn't that tough, but for someone who isn't that familiar it can be overwhelming.
Lastly, I'd shy away from buying an off-the-shelve PC at one of the local electronics stores because they are built for day-to-day activities on the PC (e-mail, web, word documents, etc...). They aren't ready out of the box to be a PC DAW.
If you simply can't afford to go the route of a new PC, then make sure you have a backup image of your current XP OS (verify you can restore from it) and all critical data as it currently stands. Then format the current C drive and install Windows 7 and all of the software necessary to get you back up and running.

All good advise.... definitely get the discs and if you are ready to commit to 64 bit, that is the way to go also. Expect some troubles with older projects once you commit to 64 bit but there is enough help in forum threads now to get around those issues.. mostly. I am still surprised by how much better W7 is over XP, well worth the effort. Cheers.

BTW, not sure if it's not better cost wise to get new computer with Windows7 installed then buying OS reparatly. I've never ever bought standalone OS

thanks for all the good advice. I think i'll stick with the desktop i have for a while. it is not an off-the-shelf pc, but one i had built. i'm sure there are better ones, but it will have to work for now. thanks again you guys are a great.
