Attaching zipped .cwps to email
So this guy in England wanted some MIDI chords he could just drop into a song. A newbie with no keyboard and perhaps not advanced enough in the program to know it's not that hard to do by mouse.
I already had a MIDI file with major and minor chords but I wanted to jazz it up a little. Split all the chords from each other, gave each clip the name of the chord, groove-looped them.
Then I zipped up the .cwp file and emailed it to him, and myself.
I got it, unzipped it and it opened and played in SONAR just like it's supposed to, but it looks like he just got a shortcut link.
So, did I just get a shorcut link that led to the file on my computer?
The .cwp is 64 KB. The zipped file is 524 bytes. Doesn't seem like much.
Pardon my ignorance.
Anyway, is it even possible to email a Cakewalk project file?

Open the file on your computer and see what's inside. [edit: That is, examine the contents listing.] You should be able to view original and compressed sizes and filetypes (including shortcut, I think). If full .zip file support isn't built into your OS, get the free 7zip or something similar.

greg - 64k sounds like the size of a link file, not the actual CWP. I just verified even if all I have in the project is a MIDI track with some data and nothing else, not even a softsynth inserted, then the file size of the CWP was 369k.
it sounds like you're zipping a link (.lnk) instead of the cwp.

Yeah, that's what he thought, too.
I just opened SHS 6 and when you hover the cursor over the project file name it reads that it's 64 KB.
Anyone who cares to, go to my embarqspace link below, click on the Downloads page and see if you can download and open the project file in your SONAR.
And if any of the Bakers want to chime in on the legality of that file being uploaded for folks to download, I want to know.

there shouldn't be any problem with legality. it's just a data file.
I just downloaded it and opened it in X1. I see MIDI groove clips of chords. if this is not what jason is seeing then the problem is on his end, not yours.

When I send any files other then an MP3 or 2 ... I use www.sendspace.com where I upload the whole file and the other person can DL it. midi files are much smaller so 64k could very well be the right size.

Had a look at the file as raw bytes in Emacs and it looked about like I'd expect. Seems to be a valid .cwp.

Aha! I think your friend dragged the link from your page in the browser to the desktop or a folder. To be sure of a download, right-click the link and choose "Save Link as..." (in Firefox, or equivalent command in IE/Opera/what-have-you) from the context menu. (Your friend could also left-click the link, then choose "Save" from the dialog box that appears -- if the friend hasn't set a default action, in which case he or she won't get the dialog and might not know where the file is going. Safer to right-click IMO.)

Cool. Thanks for checking it. So the attachment I sent in an email was a shortcut to the file... on my computer. Of course it would open on my computer, but not on his, since he didn't have the project. I should have put it on the web site to begin with. Thanks to all of you for the help.

I would not zip it.... just upload the CWP file to a server site like I use, retrieve the link and email the link.
I used to work that way with Janet before we started to use mp3's... that was so much easier.
If you can imagine it... the first song we collabed on we sent the bundles..... oh my!

Oops, I see -- the original was a .zip, not the same as the file I downloaded. Got confused there. Maybe something similar happened on your end of things? *shrug*

No need to zip a MIDI file. They are already small. You could also save the project as a MIDI file. Then there's no weirdness at all. MIDI files Email as attachments, very simple.

Yeah, Cactus Music, I have emalied .mids before, but this is a Cakewalk project file.
The MIDI file doesn't display the groove looping or clip names and all the chords are in one long clip instead of nicely seperated for easy dragging or inserting of the chords into a project or adding to the Sample Content Groove Clip folder.
I tried to make it easy for the young man. He was no doubt asleep in the UK when I posted the thing on my web site. Haven't heard from him yet today.
