Rushing The Season
Autumn is now less than a month away, Dog Avatar season is almost over and I'm approaching my 10,000th post. Trying to count all the folks who have dog avatars, I keep losing count. Beagle, Bubba, Bapu, Old55, SteveStronomerUK, Bubba... no wait, I already counted him. Beagle, Bubba... Ten helpful thingies to whoever correctly guesses my dog avatar.

RobertB Canis minor? I'm thinking... not quite. I'm going with Canis Major (and, yes, I'm Sirius!)

Talking about rushing the season..... about 3 weeks ago, I was in Lowes buying something when I glanced over and noticed Halloween decorations and other such festive item were set up and running on an end cap right near the front entrance. Middle of summer, and it's Halloween selling season, I guess next week will be Thanksgiving decor, and the week after that... The most festive of seasons..... Christmas.... I wonder what they're gonna call it this year?

bapu Beagle (notice I got top billing this time! wooohooo!) Alphabetically incorrect as it is. why do you think it's incorrect alphabetical? Maybe his criteria was age or numerology or number of children or hex translated post count or unfunniness.

ampfixer Cygnus X1, The dog star. Um... Cygnus is a constellation and X-1 is blue supergiant variable star designated HDE 226868 within that constellation... The "Dog Star" is Canus Major aka Sirius as "someone" posted above. I expect this to be corrected in the next upgrade. (or not)

ampfixer was probably referring to the snow dog ... the star itself is not literal, it represents a collectivist mentality

(or not) [smug] No need to wait Craig, I'll correct you now Sirius, also know as the 'Dog Star' is a star is in the constellation of Canis (not Canus) Major. Star catalogues and atlases assigned a letter of the Greek alphabet to the brightest stars in a constellation - generally speaking the brightest star would be assigned 'alpha', the second 'Beta' and so on. Sirius is thus known as alpha (α) Canis Majoris. From Earth, Sirius appears (i.e. 'apparent magnitude) as the second brightest star in the sky. [/smug] SteveStronomerUK - I like that Greg

Yep - sorry about the typo - I was more for correcting the main content. I have friends that prefer cannibis major and some, from southern California, that prefer staring at the stars. Now if those two groups got together...

Data has been collated, times checked and certified, IDs verified and, alas, there is no clear winner. First mention of the constellation by RobertB. Craigb was first to be Sirius. Say, you guys related? 'Dog Star' from ampfixer. The SteveStrummerUK entered a Canis Majoris. I think Steve is closest with his post # 16. It is Sirius a and b, image stolen borrowed from the Smithsonian website. So to be fair to all of you who were on the right track, here; take what you need and leave the rest.
