Symphonic Instruments

Can anyone tell me a good Vst for orchestral instruments that won't break my bank (or better yet, freeware) and would be compatible with HS6?  I've got the Studio Instruments, to take care of strings but without some good winds and brass behind them I can't really get the feeling that I'm looking for.

Don't know what break the bank is to you and certainy not freeware, but East West has Symphonic Orchestra Gold Complete on sale for $297 until the 31st. I have it and you can do great stuff with it. You cannot beat the price for what you get. Again, don't know what your price range is but don't think you will find much better. You also need an ilok key to use the program.

Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 is 149.00 and you can probably find it cheaper. I think CW had a special on it for 79.00 last month. It is easy to use and sounds good.

I found this but I don't know hw good it is. I think it will pay on the free Sampletank player bt you may want to ask someone else. Plus, they have a deal going on where if you make a purchase before Sept. 15 you get two more free items of equal or less value... so if you decide to get it look around the IK site at downloadable programs and see if there are two other things that you want ad buythe most expensive one... then get the other two free. However, IKs price is prbably higher than the FM price so think it over.

This may work too, they seem to have a dowloadable player but I would call someone and ask them if it will work for you:  http://www.floridamusicco.com/proddetail~prod~ik_sonic_refills_5.htm

If the free stuff does not meet your requirments here are a couple of suggestions

You can't go wrong with Miroslav Philharmonic  http://www.ikmultimedia.com/philharmonik/versions/  - Its in the IK Multimedia group buy so if you budget will run that far you will be able to get in on that and get some real bang for your buck. I have the CE version, its old but sounds great and covers most things. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2373144

Also look at Yellowtools Symphonic Orchestra is good for 99 Euros (less if you are outside the EU and can avoid the VAT)
    http://www.yellowtools.us/cp21/cms/index.php?id=987

It's based on the Kirk Hunter samples, the percussion is a bit weak but the rest is excellent.

+1 for Miroslav Philharmonik. If you can swing it, get the full version as that'll give you enough orchestra's/vocal choirs to keep you busy for some time....good sounds too!!

+1 for Miroslav. Great sounds and the group buy is still going  on.

I'm not crazy about the interface though. Other than that, great product.

I'm a fan of Miroslav, too. It's quite often my go-to orchestral package. Although it's really not up to serious orchestration or film scores, it's adequate for pop and rock string accompaniment and a good value.

Also, if your budget is 0 or some other single digit, don't forget the humble TTS-1. When we did our orchestral shootout last year, a TTS-1 entry did very well in the voting. The lesson learned in that exercise was it's far more about technique than the tools.

Has some reasonable Brass samples in DSK, as well as a few saxophones.  I found the trumpets to have a subtle flanged affect to them but not bad and much improved over GM soundbanks.  The interface is a little bit convoluted and not easy to understand, so it takes a lot of earwork.  I was also unable to find a complete wind section in any of the VST's but still an improvement here and there is what progress is really about.

Thank you much all for your advice, and a Good find Jbow!

In your opinion, since I have GPO4, will a gain anything if I get Miroslav? I need to pick two freebies in the IK promotion. I bought Amplitude 3 Full and am probably going to add Amplitude Fender but I'm not sure what other one to add. I am thinking about Samplitude XL, Miroslav, or SVT... any advice would be great! I have 28 points before the Amplitude purchase and figure once I decide on what freebies to get I can use the points to add some things I really like to the products I have.

Also a fan of Miroslav here, I don't know about Sampletank, they're working on SampleTank 3 right now... I've found some useful stuff in SampleTank 2.5 but I've used Miroslav more. I guess it depends on what kind of music you make. I have GPO 4 too, I hardly ever use it. Though to be fair I haven't really put in time to learn.

    Julien,
Check out some of the tutorials/videos on Miroslav and see if it's something you can use (which I'm sure you'll find). It's quite easy to layer sounds in Sampletank (using Miro sounds) and they fit quite well in the musical bed (only the small gui is a bit of a pain to read, but you can change the colors from that hideous red it comes with). If I'm not mistaken, I believe you get about 4GB's of libraries.

Yes, jbow, if you're getting Miroslav for cheap, grab it. The textures are different from GPO, and there are a few goodies in there that GPO doesn't have, so they would complement one another.

I would not pay full price for Miroslav, though. Or SampleTank for that matter. Their discounted prices are actually more in line with what they should have been going for in the first place.

P.S. Interesting trivia: Miroslav, when it first went on the market, was priced at $4,000.00.

Apparently I'm way in the minority here..I'll have to check out Miroslav again (I have whatever came with Sampletank Free)..but I was really unimpressed, as I recall.  To me, most of the sounds were reminscent of videogame soundtracks from the early 90's.  (although, isn't that around when miroslav came out?)

Perhaps I was overly harsh at first listen.  Or maybe you just need to layer the "heck" out of them to get something decent (which I didn't try).

Thanks for the input BF.... and I am speechless re: 4k for this. It makes me wonder what sort of price they will stick on the upgrade that they said is coming.
I will likely go with Miroslav and Fender. Can you play Miroslav in ST or can you use other sample players. I don't guess it matters much since there is a free player.

    Thanks again!

4K... dang. I bet someone, somewhere will be ticked to see that I can get it for free.

I use the main SampleTank player for all the ST libraries, including Miroslav, Sonic Synth, SampleMoog and SampleTron. In fact you can use the Miroslav player for all the others, too. It has a little bigger UI (splits the patch list into two pages) but I prefer the ST browser.

SampleTank FREE would be a good option as it has some Miroslav sounds in it but if you wanted to go all out you could get Miroslav, SampleTank and Sonik Synth for the price of one right now! http://www.ikmultimedia.c..ampletankfree/features/ http://www.ikmultimedia.com/philharmonik/features/
