Midi set up help

I am in between knowing what I am doing and being completely uneducated. But basically, I have been unable to find the answer to exactly what I am looking for. I have been using sonar for a while, however I just bought an Akai Mpk Mini. I am trying to program the pads and keys for different settings, but have no idea how to set up specific pads. I am also wondering how I can set it to play different loops on each pad etc... please help

Thanks!

Just to add, I am able to use the midi keyboard when using soft synths such as Cakewalk TTS. I am wondering how I can assign the pads, knobs, and other settings to different tracks and loops?

First you need to go to Options/Midi Devices and make sure the Akai is selected.  If there are 2 input options, select them both.
Second go to Options/controllers and surfaces and make sure the "controllers/surfaces box reads ACT controller 1, and In Port has the first input of of your midi controller selected (this is usually the keyboard part of the controller), and select your soundcard for output.  In the second line of Cont. and Surf. assign your Akai to the Controllers and Surfaces Box, and the In Port will be the second input of your MIDI Controller(this is usually the (rotaries/faders/knobs/etc).
The final step is to go to Options/ACT Learn.  From the dropdown menu in the upper left Select your Akai Mpk ( you may need to find a name online that will work for it, For Example I use the Eiderol PCI500 but my control surfaces are listed under PCI 300).  This will create a list of assigned controls, and will let you know "what does what".
After that it should just be a matter of learning your control surface.

There is only one input option for the whole controller. However, when I try and open ACT learn, it will not allow me to. I am not sure why.

It appears I have gotten to the bottom of it...somehow. As far as programming pads and control knobs go. This is a bit off topic, but relates to my inexperience. Can anyone tell me how to set up loops and samples on the pads to play simultaneosly if it is possible? Thanks for ur help!

Did you read the manual that came with the Akai? It should have those kinds of instructions.

The instructions are very vague as the booklet is only 10 pages long...

Yes. It simply sets the keys used as well as the toggle on/off etc...nothing about looping etc. I am looking how to control beats/groves I have made using sonar with the midi controller. As well as being able to switch between synths in a project using the midi controller.

you can't do that with sonar and midi.  sonar's not designed for that type of work.
