Animals released back into the wild
Herb's story about "Storm" reminded me about what I was taught as a kid. I was taught that if I touched a baby rabbit or baby bird found in the wild that its mother would no longer take care of it because it would forever have my "scent" on it. and therefore the baby would die in the wild if I even touched one. so first - is this true? and 2nd if it's true, then why would Herb's plan to re-release the squirrel into the back yard wild be successful if Storm ever wants to marry and have little squirrels? wouldn't all the female squirrels shun him because he smells like humans?

I believe it does apply for birds, but we've had to move baby bunnies out of the way of the lawn mower and momma still cares for them (the pictures I posted before of her nursing were after we had moved them). Of course, both momma and papa like us and tend to be comfortable around us - even within three or four feet, so that may change things. Herb's little guy looks like he wouldn't need care if it wasn't for the storm so he should be alright.

I've heard that too.... but I think it's a momma's excuse to keep little kids from wanting to mess with wild critters that might bite or have lice, or whatever...... I raised a pigeon that I found in an attic. the work being done had blocked it's momma from getting in to feed it. scared the mess outta me when I saw it move out of the corner of my eye in that dark attic.... I brought it home.... used poultry dust to kill the bugs on it, and raised it. We hoped it would return to the wild. For a number of weeks it did in fact hang around the back yard and followed us around as we took our evening walks around the block. As time went on it started to get "that wild look" in it's eyes...and eventually one day we came out in the morning and it was simply gone. I'm assuming it flew off, because there were no "tell tale" feathers like a cat might have gotten it. We do know that some pigeons do live around the old barns in the area.... so we think a flock came by and our bird saw familiar looking birds and decided to hang out with them. Besides, they release injured eagles back to the wild all the time after having been handled by people. They go on to mate successfully, and I think the human smell would wear off in a day or two anyway.

(this must have been 1992ish) My Science teacher in college was explaining to us that touching a bird was not going to make it's mother kill it or not take care of it. Then he went on to explain while he was studying some type of bird while he was in college... himself and his class mates would go to a nest and tag the babies with some sort of tracking device... so according to that Science teacher - - no ... it's not true - for whatever that's worth he taught next science door to my music college - at the Illinois college of optometry - but my music college hired him on give us science classes once a week " - for whatever that's worth

The smell the hands stuff is a myth... and it's a good myth because it keeps little boys from climbing trees and borrowing baby birds to satisfy a curiosity. My sister was a well regarded bird rescuer in the small town I was raised in. I grew up in a house that seemed to always have a bird being rehabilitated and let back out in the wild. We did have one sparrow that came as an infant from a fallen tree and he never grew a tail and so he lived with us for 13 years. He would sleep in my mom's house coat as she watched Johnny Carson on the late night TV. In most states it's not legal to mess with wild life... so if you want to save somethings life as Herb did you just do so quietly and with out contacting any local authorities. It should also be said that many communities do have special volunteer organizations that are approved for rehabilitation of wild life. Even though I have first hand experience of people using common sense to successfully help wild animals... the official recommendation is that we should try to turn over any rescued animals to the "professional" volunteers that specialize in this work. Having said all that... I am personally thankful that Herb did the good work of giving that baby squirrel a chance at growing up. Good work Herb!!! all the best, mike

I kind of figured it was an "old wives tale" or something that parents made up to keep kids from being "too curious."
