Having midi playback timing issues. Need a little help.

I have a small problem w/ midi playback. Nothing too major, but I'm noticing that for some reason when I record a midi track w/ my controller, whether it be drums, piano, etc....it seems everything is slightly shifted to the left when it's played back. Thus causing it to playback slightly ahead of time. It's as if Sonar is trying to compensate for something that is not there. I'm aware this can happen when you have buffers set very high but this is happening even when I lower the buffers on my sound card to around 128 or 256 or sometimes even less. I then have to nudge and move things around to get them exactly where I want them. Tired of wasting unnecessary energy on this and would rather focus that energy on creating. I'm thinking it's probably just a small setting that I'm forgetting about or overlooking that can correct this behavior. Possibly something in the config file or preferences? Would greatly appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Hello,
I was having a very similar problem last night. It may not be the same thing causing yours, but the discussion is here:

You said "shifted to the left when it's played back"; is it just audibly early, or do the MIDI events appear early in the timeline?
If the events are early in the timeline, how early on average in milliseconds?
Are you playing soft synths, input-monitoring a hardware synth, or direct-monitoring a hardware synth?
What audio interface and driver mode (I gather it's ASIO)?
Using the audio metronome or MIDI?
USB or DIN MIDI ports? If DIN, are they on your audio interface?
    Non-zero "Timing Offset" value set?
You might try setting IgnoreMidiInTimestamps=1 in TTSSEQ.INI

@Piers66 - My issue is slightly different as I'm having problem w/ the midi track itself playing back slightly ahead of time. Nothing audio related.

@StarTekh I'm running ASIO. Are you running ASIO as well?

I can go to the piano roll view and clearly see that the midi notes are ahead of where I played them by maybe a few milliseconds I'm guessing. I'm running X1c...Intel Quad Core @ 2.83gHz...10gigs ram...M-Audio Delta 1010 sound card connected via pci. All updated drivers. Pretty solid setup. I don't think it's setup related but I could be wrong.

This is w/ soft synths. Sorry for all the posts but FF 6 is causing issues w/ my posts on the forum.

    Hello,

I'm really (!) no expert, but if you're having a problem with recording MIDI, and not with playback (and subsequent recording of audio, like me), then surely the problem has nothing to do with your soundcard and therefore is not an ASIO issue. It has to be with your MIDI interface, and how Sonar communicates with it...

Of course, if you've got one box that combines the two, then it's hard to separate them. I'm using a hardware mixer for audio and an outboard midi interface (a Midiman Midisport 4x4), so they're not even on the same USB socket.

    Hello,

Off topic, but I use IE7 just to post on this forum and log into Microsoft web exchanges, and FF6 for everything else.

If you have to use FF6, the workaround I found was to insert html line break code: {less than symbol}BR{greater than symbol} whenever I wanted to start a new line.

Some systems need a Timing Offset (Preferences > Audio > Sync and Caching) to sync up MIDI recording and playback with audio. If the MIDI is early, a positive offset will fix that.

@Piers66 - My midi and audio are combined on the Delta 1010.  Thanks for the IE suggestions btw.  Didn't even think of that.

@brundlefly - Thanks I'll play around w/ that and see if it helps.

@StarTekh - Yes, ASIO reported latency is checked and is at 299.

    .
Also, could the MIDI buffer settings under "Preferences>Midi>Playback and Recording" have anything to do w/ this?

Blade: ok in midi > playback and recording< its set to 250 here
above that is currently assigned port (fw 410 midi) unchecked

try setting the 250 to 10 see what happens or if your device is chk'd un do that 1st..I understand totaly your issue, its just how to fix it.and ive been away all summer..
