tight kick drum for house music with sonar8PE

 Hi,

I`ve been composing and recording with Sonar8 PE but during the final mix down I realized that my kick drum just doesn`t  sound good enough to get an overall well balanced mix.

I have used Battery, Dr-008 Dxi2, Beatscape, and samples of 808 and 909s I found online, I don`t have any hard instrument. Tried to mix them with Dropzone, EQ and compress them but when I compare to the kick drums I sampled from professional artists, mine is just not tight, heavy or powerful enough.

I`ve uploaded an example so that you could compare them and maybe give me some advice.
The first 2 beats are kicks sampled from a deadmau5 song, last 2 are mine.

Im not trying to sound the same, but just want to have that level and a decent quality.  I don`t feel very comfortable using samples from other artists albums...

Any tips and advises are appreciated.
 Cheers!

Well personally I think your second two samples have more attack, are tighter and are more powerful than the first two samples (as the waveform display indicates).

Then again, I'm not into house.....

I suggest you investigate Sonar's PX64 percussion strip plugin as a first step, either on each individual drum or on the whole kit (or both). It's an enormously powerful tool for processing percussive sounds.

To make your second set of samples more like the first, off the top of my head, I'd try adjusting the initial transients, compression, distortion, e.q. and, if necessary, adding a burst of noise (or double with an electric 808/909-style snare hit that's had its initial transients removed). Then go round again and re-tweak as necessary.

Having said all of that, could the problem be that the kick are fine, but are being masked by something else in the mix?

    Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

     Thanks so much tlw,

I checked about the PX64 and it looks like the right tool for me.

I think the initial transients adjustment and the burst are exactly what I`ve been seeking for.  I had tried to double it with hats but snares or a burst noise never came across my mind.

I`m going to work on it now and the mix with other parts can probably be the next step?

Cheers again for your neat advice!
