midi input monitoring...ONE KEY FAILING TO TRIGGER/DROPPING NOTES?

this is a bizarre occurrence that i'm wondering if anyone has experienced. recently my MOTIF7 has been dropping out a single E4 note on my keyboard. to clarify, when i decide to input any keyboard playing and i activate the midi input monitoring in SONAR 7 PRODUCER in anticipation of recording, AND the local control on the M7 is set to off, all the notes play fine EXCEPT E4! (this is a 76 note keyboard) what's interesting is that i can DRAW in the note (in the piano roll view) and it will play back, it just WILL NOT trigger while playing. neither will it trigger if i just hit the dead key and not hear it, expecting to hear it upon playback. once i turn the local control on (for example, to use the M7 sequencer) all the keys play perfectly. i'm bugged by this since the key is in the middle of the keyboard; what's worse is that if i change the octave on the keyboard to avoid using that key, the dropout changes (still E-whatever octave) as well. i'm thinking it's a latency issue, but it's happening whether or not i have any tracks previously recorded or not. has anyone experienced this, and if so what is the deal?

thanks in advance

Does SONAR's MIDI Activity monitor showing Note On/Off messages being received at the input (left-side indicator light) when you play that note? (Note: the monitor icon may be hidden in the Win7 System Tray or disabled in Preferences > Customization > Display)

If not, try connecting a MIDI cable directly form the OUT to IN on the keyboard, and verifying whether that key can trigger the note via MIDI with Local Off.

The only way I know of for SONAR to echo some MIDI notes and not others to a given port is with the MIDI Event Filter in the FX bin or a Drum Map re-routing it. But they both operate on the output of a track, and would affect playback of an existing clip as well as live input echo.

MIDI key bindings? If you use a MIDI key as the key binding shift key, then you lose the ability to play that note by itself. Bill B

Good call. That was my first guess.

Hmmm, yeah. Hadn't thought of that. But E4 (in SONAR-speak) is pretty far up, even on a 76-key board, no? You wouldn't intentionally choose that for MIDI shift. Unless maybe he had even a smaller keyboard at some point in the past...

thank you SOOOOO much; there was indeed a midi key binding issue. that solution hadn't occurred to me as i don't use a lot of key bindings with my keyboard. lo and behold, in the 'midi shift' option it was set to E5. you guys are geniuses!

thanks again, to all who offered their sage advice.
