what is the biggest number of tracks you have worked on Sonar X1?
I'm curious how many tracks professional sound engineers are working and dealing with. I wonder also how many Sonar X1 can handle before...you know

The thing I just finished this weekend was around 65 during working it up, and then got bounced / edited to about 45 for mixing. It's not the biggest I've ever had, but I can remember the details, so here goes:

Reduction was purely for creative reasons, everything was going fine at 65 tracks. This was a combination of stereo and mono, some recorded, some coming back from software instruments. ProChannel EQ on every channel, PC compression on around half. Quite complex routing, I think there were 8 separate buses in the end. Instruments wise there were two instances of BFD, two of Massive, and a DimensionPro. So reasonably light on that front. Effects, can't remember them all, but there was both a PerfectSpace and a Lexicon Pantheon in there. Bass track wasn't the best performance of all time, so a lot of audio snapping on that. Mostly kept it un-bounced for easy tweaking.

As mentioned, it's up to the computer how many tracks you can handle. My own projects are small, but I know that especially people who do film scoring and operate with orchestrals often go far over 100 tracks.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Computer is NOT the only limitation, I understand we have talking here about multi-threaded application and as such with number of threads (tracks) going up the probability of deadlocks (freezing), race conditions (data corruption) increases exponentially. All these depend on how well application was designed, codded and tested.

If you count layers in tracks a typical project for me is somewhere in the region of 10 - 20 MIDI tracks and 40 - 50 Audio tracks, that gets paired down reasonably quickly to around 10 MIDI and 15 - 20 audio. I don't use much in the way of soft synths though. Maybe two or three instances or more depending on where I source my drums from. 90% of my MIDI work is hardware drum machines and synths. I also run an under powered computer (by CW's minimum specs) - not had any problems with that sort of load so far.

On my system I managed upwards of 68 tracks...30 audio and 38 MIDI..the MIDI would usually have a bunch of synths and a few effects on it..the audio would have either my Arp2600 or Minimoog and a bunch of vocals. PC EQ would be on all of them as well as PC compression on about half. I have heard of higher amounts of track usage though...

Not that it would matter, Bub. The issue is about how many tracks Sonar X1 can handle before it explodes but that's kind of an odd question because it depends on way too many factors. Pros could have anywhere between 5 and hundreds of tracks, depending on what it is they are recording or working on. The fact that they are 'pros' isn't going to make Sonar suddenly work better, so it's irrelevant. You'll get all sorts of numbers ranging from very few to high, depending on what type of work they do. So who cares? Personally an average session for me is between 50 and 150 tracks, I did some testing with the X1 demo and had pleasing results in terms of performance.

I have a buddy who writes incredibly huge projects. One of his projects is over 150 tracks and believe it or not most of those track can have dozens...yes 'dozens' of track layers. His 'songs' can be close to 20 minutes long. He uses 8.0 and 8.5 and has run into some really odd behavior and corruption many times on these giant projects. I do not know how programs are 'coded' or designed but it certainly seems that the more you push the program the higher chance you have of getting a corrupt project and seeing some whacky bugs. I range from 30-100 tracks and I dont run into track count issues. I may not be 'pro' enough to respond to this thread, so take this for whats it's worth.

OK, bigest project I've made money on was roughly 180 tracks. Some were mono recordings of drums, percussion, strings, vocals, choir etc and many were stereo instrument tracks so if we count mono tracks It was well over 200 + video. The tracks weren't filled up with info/sound from start to finish and I will admit that my DAW at the time struggled a long the way and a lot of bouncing was needed. Think this was in S7 or S8, it's a while ago. Bigest project I've done for my self was almost as big on my current machine and it performed better even though latency needed to be raised and some bouncing a long the way. Currently I'm working on a 14 song album with a high tech metal band and the projects looks like they will be ca between 80 and 120 mono and stereo tracks. I'm guessing up til around 150 mono tracks. On average I tend to end up with between 60 and 90 tracks, a mix between audio and instrument. And I use a lot of automation and routing things everywhere. *disclaimer - I have not counted MIDI tracks. I use tracklayers a lot but rarely keep more than 5 layers. Not all tracks have audio from start to finish.* --In my everyday life I don't really feel any limitations while using Sonar on my current DAW. It has enough to offer in terms of muscle power. So I'm happy, and I'm making some money

biggest session I've had recently has been around 70 tracks + 24 busses (99% audio, occasionally there'll be a soft synth but not that often) and can run with all plugins in at 256 samples no problems.
