Monitor DeCouplers

I have Mopads.  I think they help.  I want to think they help just to justify their cost.

What do you have?

I've got the original mo-padds, and I SWEAR my stereo imaging and bass end tightened up after installing them.

We're talking "decoupling" Mike, not "amplifying".

I gather you don't use any *pads whatsoever. 

I have some el cheapo stands from GuitarCenter. 

They are heavy gauge steel and they have a three point contact with the floor. On the top plate they also have a strip of high density urethane foam to keep the speakers from slipping around.

The speakers weigh just under 40 lbs a piece.


I imagine if there is a benefit to be had from a foam pad that it will be appreciated most by operators of setups that have very light weight speakers resting upon a very light weight structure. The Primacoustics "science" page seems to indicate that with out  pads resonant energy will emanate from structures like desks and shelve and cause comb filter problems.

I guess that can happen if you put $100 dollar speakers on a $50 desk.

For example; I have a $50 folding plastic table I sometimes work on.

It seems like any science that revealed consistent and reproducible characteristics would be familiar to hi end speaker designers and they would have incorporated foam foundations built in to all the top of the line speakers.

I searched AES E library again today and can't find any papers written about the subject.

My guess is that most researchers would rather design a better speaker enclosure than to spend time figuring out to make a cabinet with resonance problems sound better after the fact.


I'd like to find out that I'm missing some paper. The AES Library is not the easiest thing to run a search through.
