Question about Envelopes in X1c

If I have an envelope with several nodes in random places causing changes through the course of a track, is it possible to select the entire envelope and raise or lower the whole thing in one shot?

I know I could just go to OFFSET MODE and raise or lower the Volume or Pan, keeping the envlope changes relative, but that is not what I need.

I have a top and bottom snare mic on a drum kit. I am using Sonitus gate to gate the snare. I create an envelope to control the threshold of the gate. Becuase of inconsistant hits from the drummer, I have to make a lot of changes in the envelope to the threshold.

After getting through one track, rather than doing it all again for the other snare track (bottom mic) I copy the envelope from the top snare track. Afterall, all the hits are in the same place.

But, transients are a little different still, so some hits that open the top snare gate are not opening the bottom snare gate. If I could lower the entire envelope, all would be well.

But when I try to do that, SONAR X1 selects only sections of the envelope. It selects sections of clips or previous nodes. Even when I manually select the entire envelope, as soon as I click to lower it, SONAR loses my selection and goes back to selecting just a small section.

This is anoying to me. I don't post too often, but when I do I am usually singing the praises of SONAR. But if I do find a shortcoming I will not hesitate to call it out. If I cannot select an entire envelope with all its changes to saise or lower the whole thing, then that is a shortcoming. Am I missing something?

Click and drag along the bottom of the clip to select all the nodes. Then drag on one of the nodes (not the line segments) to adjust the entire envelope.

Yeah, it's a bit fiddly. You have to hold a key down in order to retain the selection, or it selects the bit you click on. Can't remember what key it is offhand, but I'm sure it's one of alt, shift or ctrl. I was doing exactly this a couple of days ago, and couldn't remember for about ten minutes, was really perplexed. But it does work.

If you want to move the entire envelope there is no need to select anything. There is a hot spot at the top of the clip using the Smart tool that will let one adjust the full envelope.

Blimey, you learn something new every day. That's really handy.

Hmm... would be helpful if the cursor changed in some way to indicate that.

There is an indication of this. The Smart tool tuns into a different looking Smart tool when you go below the hot spot. Volume is displayed too as a tool tip.

However if you don't know about it X1 isn't going to let you know it is there. LOL  Sort of a state secret.

The Smart tool can do all sorts of things with automation.

Wow, thanks. It was just me being stupid, SONAR had what I needed covered, I just didn't realize how to get it done. Thanks to both of you Johns.

At first glance the Smart tool seems fiddly but it really isn't.

First off the smart tool is but one tool in a slew of other tools or better single purpose tools. With it most tasks can be done without changing tools. That is what it is all about. X1 is setup to use it with hot spots and with the use of alt and ctrl and shift.

A good way to find out about the power it offers is to get a project you don't mind screwing up and experimenting. Goto the manual and there under Smart tool is a listing of what it can do and how to access those abilities.

One great thing about it is what you learn in one window or view will also apply in all other views.

Sorry... when you mentioned having several nodes in different places, I thought you wanted to move an entire _section_ of the envelope. Yes, for the entire track envelope, there's a hotspot at the top. The Smart tool is very cool and powerful.

I like the way that "top of the track" thing defaults to moving the entire envelope, but obeys the time ruler selection otherwise, inserting nodes at the end of your selection. I wish I'd have known about this two days ago, when I did several hundred automation edits on a vocal :)

Looks like a PRS, but the resolution makes the bird markers look like markers off a Ricky or Charvel. (1980x1200)
