Really Cool Old Guitars
In the days of ebay it's nice to see people discover old instruments in the attic. A person working near my shop came by with a couple of guitar cases today. I asked what kind of guitars she had, and the young lady replied "A black one and a white one". The white one turned out to be a blonde 59 Epiphone archtop. Natural finish, gold hardware, very much like a Gibson L5 or L7. The black one was a 1980 BC Rich Mockingbird fretless bass. It was in beautiful condition, active electronics and custom black laquer finish. These are both real nice instruments but each appeals to a small group of players. After I checked the paperwork we connected with a vintage guitar seller. The young lady gets this years tuition worries greatly reduced. They are still out there boys and girls, never give up the hunt. I'm still looking for my 57 strat.

I played all of those models in the last year. You're very lucky.

I bought my '74 Telecaster Custom (with factory Bigsby) on Ebay. While it's not quite on par with a '59 Epi, this exact model and year was what i'd been lusting after since I started playing, and the tremolo bar was just a bonus... Gotta love ebay.

A couple of years ago I bought an old Epiphone Sheraton II at a local store who was selling iit for the original owner who was a veteran and a survivor of the ""D DAY" invasion oof France in WW II. It does not have the best finish, it looks like it had some sort of repair to the body and was not finished very well, but I got a good deal on it and to me it has provinance, it meaant something to a hero... and it plays and sounds like a dream. I also once bought a Harmony acoustic blues guitar with some really bad wear on the back of the neck. Whoever played it wore a ring I think. The neck had come loose at the body. I got it for 7 dollars and then paid a good luthier from Macon, GA. They called him Chief or something because his haiir and complexion made him look like an indian. He played a Fender Evil Twin... anyway he shimmed and reglued the neck for 35 bucks and that little box has some soul... I bet Sidroe knows who I am talking about, I wishI could remember his name. I gae his number to my daughter when she went to Mercer Uniersity in case of emergency and he was good for it. She had a flat tire in a bad place. She callled him and he came right to her aid. He worked for a while as the luthier at MARS Musi in Marietta, GA and that is how I met him. I love to get old but good guitars. Julien

I recently sold the last of my "vintage" guitars (a 1964 Epiphone Cortez in dead mint condition) and bought an Eastman 810 CE. While I realize the nostalgia AND the appreciation of some if not all of the older guitars it was just a no brainer. I've now got a guitar I actually use that plays like butter and covers my jazzbo needs where before I had a pretty little guitar that sat on a stand a reminded me of my childhood. When I became a man...I put away childish things. Unless, of course, that childish thing is a 59 Les Paul;-)
