OT ---question for the pooter tech guys

I have eventually got round to installing guitar rig 2 on my main studio computer
all was fine (bar the annoying NI registration)
the installation of the rig control didnt work
I suspect because it needs usb2
Question
how do I check wether the computer has usb2?

Thanks in advance

Andy

    Hi Andy,
Yep it needs USB2, cos it's an audio interface too

Best way to find out any of this stuff is to get something like SiSoftware Sandra Lite
    which interrogates your machine.

If your machine is more than a couple of years old it's quite likely not to have USB2, but its a cheap addon via PCIcard or PCMCIA for laptop. - check your local Maplins!

An easy, but certainly not foolproof, way to find out is to look in your Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers for a USB 2.0 Root Hub. Every XP system I've ever seen with USB has its root hubs listed in Device manager, with a separate device category listed for any USB 2.0 root hubs. I can't absolutely guarantee that this is always the case, but it's a good bet. It's not always labeled "USB 2.0". My GigaByte shows "Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" instead. The non-2.0 root hubs are called "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller". With my board, if I plug in a USB 2.0 device, it automatically gets routed to the 2.0 ("Enhanced") host controller.

If your system is older, it might only support USB 2.0 on a few of its built-in or header (i.e. panel connectors that are hooked to the motherboard via a cable) ports. Unless you've got documentation, or you happen to already have a device connected to the USB 2.0 root hub (you can tell what's connected to what by choosing View > Devices by Connection in Device Manager), you'll just have to try a few until you find one of them.

    Andy ...

Usually if you connect a device that wants USB 2 to a USB 1 or 1.1 port, XP should come up with a warning message. Another thing to look out for with Guitar Rig 2 is that it requires SP2 with Win XP. Do you have that installed?

    Best,
    Geoff

...now there is a novel suggestion:

2 port Adaptec for $31 at Best Buy

4 port Adaptec for $40 at CompUSA

You can get other/cheaper brands; but Adaptec has a pretty solid reputation for compatibility. As a rule of them, I would purchase Adaptec in a heartbeat. (My FireWire 400/800 is an Adaptec based on a TI chipset.)

If you go this route, you might consider shutting off some or all of the on-board USB controllers. This might save you an IRQ or two; and on a DAW the less extra stuff you have running the better. Many general peripherals can run via an external powered hub. I've got both of my mice and both of my M-Audio MIDI controllers on one hub. That way you need fewer actual ports on your card/motherboard.

Hmmm, Well I don't use the Rig Control at all (I use a Behringer FCB1010) and I do not have SP2 installed...and so far no problems running GR2.
