IS there a way to record midi with the tones on a keyboard that is midi able?
Ive got a couple keyboards that are midi usable, as controllers, but im wondering is it possible to record midi with the tones on the keyboard(s) instead of the tones in one of my soft synths? I really like the tones that are in these keyboards but have trouble getting audio loops sliced correctly, I want to record these tones as midi data and have complete manipulative control but im not sure if this is even possible?

yes and no, MIDI is just data, there is no sound in the data. just computer data. the sound is something you can hear that is triggered by the MIDI data. either an oscillator and filters or a manipulated looped sample triggered by the data that MIDI is. but to record the audio from the keyboard, just connect the audio outputs of the keyboard up to your soundcard. if you want to record MIDI first so you can edit it, then just record the audio, then set up your MIDI tracks' OUTPUT to go back to the keyboard, set up an audio track to record the audio from the soundcard (with the keyboard connected to it) and then arm the audio track and hit record. the MIDI is sent back to the keyboard, triggers the audio and sends that to the soundcard and records on the audio track.

let me get this straight: in this particular instance im talking about using a casio wk 200 through my us 800. So setup a an audio track input from the casio and output to the us 800, record the audio, then drop in a midi track, set the output back to the casio, drop in another audio track (for a total of 2 audio tracks and 1 midi track) and set this second audio tracks I/o to what? thats where you lost me :/

no, not quite. it's more simple than that. MIDI TRACK OUTPUT => CASIO AUDIO TRACK INPUT <= soundcard with casio's LINE OUTPUTS connected to it. if you ALREADY have MIDI data on the MIDI track, then just ARM the AUDIO track and hit record. if you don't, then arm the MIDI track, record the MIDI data, edit it if you want before recording the audio, then arm the audio track and hit record.

Ok so the audio tracks input is the us800, which is receiving sound from the casio, which is being played via data from the midi track and theres just 1 audio track here and 1 midi track... So output the midi track to the casio/us800, and then also make that the audio tracks input?

Check out this post of mine from not too long ago. Step by step instructions for setting up a keyboard synth: http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2363828 Basically you want to treat a keyboard synth like a separate controller and sound module.

thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuys!! I was confused at first because ive never used my interface on a track input, forgot it was possible. Wow this changes everything!Just in case you guys were curious, on my casio the soundtrack tone is just plain awesome to me. And i could not for the life of me figure out how to eq the soundtrack synth in TTS to sound like this one. At the same time, i could never get my timing right when i recorded audio, and my loops sounded like crap :/ you guys have know idea how much good you've done by me :)

I'm not sure what "interface" you're referring to. but if it's a soundcard interface you still need it connected via usb if it's a usb soundcard "interface". but you still connect the 1/4" TRS into the interface from the casio also.

The USB is a MIDI interface. if you're connecting MIDI ports by DIN cables to your interface's MIDI I/O, you don' need the USB connection.

It's a great way to run the keyboard tones through a good tube amp, you'd be surprized how well the El Piano presets sound through a early '70 Champ at full tilt!
