Aux speaker for my Amp

I have a Behringer GMX 110 amp , the owners manual says I can add a 30 Watt, 4 Impedence speaker. Anybody know what that will do to the sound? Louder etc.? Can I get a high quality speaker and improve my sound? I am a bit of a handyman and not afraid to try and "build" a speaker cabinet with a speaker and wiring. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Typically guitar speakers are 8 or 16 ohms, you'll want a pair of 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel.
All Fender 2x whatever are wired for 4 ohms.
Looks like the GMX is set up to emulate a lot of "classic" amps.
Build a 2 x 10 cabinet and load it with a pair of Eminence alnico 10's.
I like the "Legend 1028K", great tone and handle lots of power.
You could go with 2 - 12's, your choice; I prefer the 10's.
I'm sure Mike will chime in with lots of options.

    :-)

I just bought 3 used but clean Weber 10A125 alnico 10" speakers.

lawn ranger, An extra speaker will usually result in more sound but you definitely want to keep track of the impedance issues.

What Tom and I are also hinting at is the "efficiency" of the speakers. The efficiency of the speakers determines how loud they are for any given amp output level. The alnico speakers we are refering to are usually the more efficient choices.

None of it is complicated but describing all the possible scenarios to you would be incredibly complicated.

Keep track of the impedance issues as you hook stuff up and you'll be able to experiment with speakers.

    best regards,
    mike

You guys have opened up some doors for thought. I originally was thinking one speaker, that could handle 30 Watts and a impedance of 4 (per the manual). So, what are some other possibilities; can I change the impedance? Is there a formula so I can stay within parameters. Will the amp. power more than one speaker? Thanks so far, good info. WCO

Ended up buying a Blackstar H5 amp, and building a speaker cabinet and installing a 12" Eminence "Wizard"  speaker, sounds great tons of volume.

Just a few thoughts for others who might be interested.

As long as you don't load the amp below its impedance rating you can run just about any speaker configuration imaginable.

The thing that confuses most people is wattage rating.

So yes, pay attention to the impedance ( ohms) but as far as wattage, anything goes ( within reason)

For tube amps it's a nice overdrive sound when you under rate the speaker wattage to the output. In other words a 30 watt speaker in a 50 watt amp might be just that tone you were looking for.
I'm not sure if this is true with Transistor outputs but I use a 30 watt Green back with a 100 watt Laney head, of course I do not crank it  as there would most likely be smoke. But in a studio set up this can work great.

The other extreme is to put a 100 watt speaker in a 20 watt amp. It will work just fine but will be cleaner sounding.

Oh and the question about will adding more speakers make it louder? It can go both ways actually. Once again depending on the efficiency etc. Generally speaking  the answer is no. Not noticeably louder. More coverage yes. Example , with my Fender Princeton you will notice it being quieter when I hook up an old Tremolux 2x10" cab. But it stays about the same volume when I use the greenback cab. The tone is more colorful, thats all.
