Songs With Similar, Quoted or Stolen Lyrics

I always thought Sting had lifted two lines directly from Ewan MacCall's Ballad of Accounting in "Fortress around your Heart".  Its close but not exact.

Sting
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon

Ewan MacCall
In the morning we built the city
In the afternoon walked through its streets

Just about different enough to keep Mr Sumner out of court?

Hootie and the Blowfish quoted close on a full verse of Bob Dylans "Idiot Wind", along with lines from "Tangled up in Blue" in their hit "Only Want to Be With You" which resulted in an out of court settlement.

There has to be a lot more, Van Morrison used quite a few quotes, they may come to me later.

If you steal from one it's called plagiarism. Steal from many and it's called research :O)

The classic case of Lennon vs Chuck Berry

Lennon: Here come old flat-top he come grooving up slowly

Berry: Here come a flat-top,  he was movin' up with me

The phrasing is similar, but then, it's rock n' roll. The first few words gave him away and exposed him to the lawsuit.

I can imagine Lennon coming up with the song, realizing the similarities and leaving the old flat-top in as a wink to his old hero Berry. But that's not how the publishers heard it.

The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    and tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

For the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall,
    Concert hall
And echoes with the sounds of salesmen
