X1c Step Sequencer difficulties

Hi all,

I just installed X1c a couple of days ago - having only installed X1 about a week ago.

I'm having difficulty getting SS to interact with SD3. X1 pre "c" worked fine - right click a clip bring up the SS, edit where needed etc.

The note labels showed which instrument they related to (snare, hi tom etc), I could write and playback in SS, SS would loop to enable editing with X1c none of the above are possible, I can't even load SS with SD3 (at least not one that's relating to what's being played).

Have I missed something? Is anyne else experiencing similar?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Are you saying that it's existing clips that won't load or you can't open the step sequencer at all?

Apart from a couple of bugs with drum maps the step sequencer is working fine here. That includes with Session Drummer 3, I've just tried it. It's definitely a step sequencer clip you are trying to open not a MIDI clip?

I have had trouble re-opening some ss clips, i double click a existing groove to edit and basically I get a empty clip. I can open it in the PRV but the ss shows it as blank. I honestly thought it was just me.

    FBB (thanks for your response)
The problem seems to be initiating any interaction  between SD3 and SS. I can load SD3 but can't hear what it's playing or generate an instance of SS that relates to the pattern loaded into SD3.

I can now, using the Media Browser only, load a kit (Steven Slate or otherwise) that loads SD3 and will then enable me to load a basic pattern that I can then edit in SS. However, SD3 and SS do not relate and SD3 is mute. That would be OK as a workaround but it restricts the type of sounds available as it is impossible to load an additional sound (splash etc.) via SS and it means that the mixer section of SD3 is also unusable.

Editing SD3 clips is very hit and miss - sometimes the commands are followed, sometimes not...

The frustrating part is that X1 was the first version of Sonar that I've had (been using since 3) that I was able to comfortably program drums with - until "c".

If I'm missing something, please share

    Thanks again

Ah. I think I see where the problem is. You can't edit the SD3 patterns directly in the Step Sequencer. AFAIK that is by design. The SS is for creating your own patterns or editing existing SS patterns. The only type of clip you can edit in the SS is a SS clip, even MIDI clips you need to convert.

If you do want to edit a pattern from SD3...............

    1. In SD3 click on the Note & + icon to the right hand end of the MIDI drop down box and drag that into your Session drummer MIDI track
    2. Click on that clip and then from the TV menu bar select Clips->Convert MIDI clip to step sequencer clip
    3. Double click on the resulting clip, opens the SS
    Hope that helps.

That should just be a case of double clicking, but with the Smart tool you have two options. You can click in the top half of the clip and it'll open in the PRV, click in the bottom half and it should open in the step sequencer. What is happening when you double click?

If you can find a way to reproduce it consistently you can put a bug report in. Inconsistent problems are harder to deal with as there's no recipe for reproducing it.

I reported a velocity display bug in the SS but that was relatively minor, just a refresh issue. There is a confirmed bug with the SS opening blank but that's with drum maps, I haven't seen it with SD3 but then again I don't use SD3 that much either.

Are you sure you're not using a drum map?

Yep that's it. It's been confirmed by CW and "submitted to development".

You can as a temporary workround use the step sequencer as a limited drum map manager. If you open up a lane, you can click in the box at the top and assign an output for that individual sound there, once you've finished all drums, save it as step sequencer pattern for recall later.

You can't do any of the note in/out assigns though.
