Help with basic midi?

Hi guys

I recently bought Sonar Essential addition and am doing fine with audio but yet to get any sound using midi. It's very frustrating! I am using a Korg Nanokey which I know is running ok with my system as it works with a free midi piano application that I downloaded. I think Cakewalk is communicating ok with it as when you hit the keys on the keyboard lights come up on the meter.

In Preferences - midi devices, nanokey comes up and is ticked as input and output (there are no other options). This doesn't work when using my external sound card (Behringer U-Control) or the computer's internal sound card.

I am running windows 7, 64 bit operating system.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Adam

in preferences go to midi/control surfaces and see if the nanokey inputs/outputs are selected fron the in/out port drop down lists

u didnt mention any soft synths that you are trying to play.             insert an instrument into an audio track, then set the output of your midi track to the instrument in the audio track.  set the midi track to midi channel 1.       next, arm the track by pressing the "A" and making it light up red.  also press the button next to it called "input monitoring"   you will here the synth when u play the keyboard now.

. Nothing in your question indicates that you know what MIDI is, or that you have done the tutorials about using soft synths and read the other parts of the manual concerning MIDI (If I'm mistaken, I apologize). MIDI is only playing instructions and has no sound. In order to make the MIDI heard, a soft synth or a hardware synth is required.

That MIDI piano you mentioned propably used GS Wavetable synth (?), which you don't want to use with SONAR, because there are better ones.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

+1 What Soft Synth are you using? No Synth-no sound.
