Better than counting sheep...

I'd have put this in the Techniques forum but I then thought that would have been really misleading.

Industry giant Dave Pensado talking to Bruce Swedien you'd think would be ground breaking revelations full of tips and wrinkles for somebody showing an interest in recording and mixing audio.

After half an hour I don't think I learned any more than "compression is for kids"...

I slept really well through the rest of it though.

The whole interview is here if you need a distraction from doing something important like organising your sock drawer.

There is a powerful message hidden in all these new instructional videos and mixing camp type enterprises.

The most *in demand* engineers in the business have enough free time that they are out on the internet promoting their ability to instruct others on how to help meet the recording industries demands.

It seems to me that at some point a significant portion of the "here is a record I just made... please buy it" industry has morphed into the "here are some instructions for making records... please buy it."  industry.

I'm glad I'm not taking on debt at a media arts school and dreaming of competing with guys like that at the next cattle call.

    best regards,
    mike

    Roger that Mike.

    I reckon that's it in a nutshell.

I actually think ol Dave's a heckuva engineer and mixer but sometimes when I see his podcasts where he pulls up a plug in (like Waves CLA Signature for instance) loads a preset...moves a couple of it's faders or knobs a bit...and then goes "Whoa...Yea that sounds nice, eh?..."  I just have to shake my head and laugh.

You make a good point Mike.

I was recently checking what Ed Stasium was up to these days (he produced some records I really dig). He states on his site that it isn't about the money and that indie projects are welcome - whether it's production, mixing or mastering. I'd be curious to know just how this translates in actual costs.
