Layers problem

I typically record multiple takes on different tracks and comp across tracks.  After reading aa post by Anderton, I decided to try using layers again.  When I record a subsequent layer starting mid-song, all other tracks (background vocals, etc) are way behind the current layer as I'm recording.  However, the clip is in the correct location in the track after recording.  I have tried saving, rebuilding layers, resetting Now Time, to no avail.  The only thing that works is to save & close X1, then when I re-open it works fine for the first new layer I record, then back to the same thing.  So I have to close and re-open between each layer.  Obviously I have something set wrong.  Any suggestions?

Are you saying there is visual display problem or an audible problem?

Does the problem only occur while tracking? You seem to indicate that as soon as you stop that everything aligns properly.

Are you using WDM or ASIO drivers?

If you are using ASIO drivers have you manually compensated for latency or are you just using the automatic (and usually incorrect) value?

What is the sample buffer size?

Do you have a PDC inducing effects or VSTis running?

If it's just a visual issue. Then don't worry about it... it's always been like that. If it's an audible issue... there will be a cause and you can learn to understand how to deal with it.

I'm using WDM drivers, buffer size set at 14 msec / 616 samples.

It's purely an audible problem.  it seems the track I'm recording layers on starts at the Now Time marker, but all other tracks are starting at the beginning of the project and playing from that point.  All layers appear to be laid down at the correct point in the project after recording -- it's just unnerving listening to 2 different points in the project at once and trying to record!

Only have a few basic effects turned on right now -- built-in Cakewalk Fx.

    Thanks-

buffer size set at 14 msec

That's big buffer. Is this is a low-end card or onboard chip that won't support a samller buffer? Anything is possible with the drivers for cheap sound card, but what you're describing is a new one on me. Pretty odd that it only happens with layers and not with recording to separate tracks.

If it's a good audio interface, it should have an ASIO driver and may work better in that mode.

Late response -- been outa commission for a bit...

It's a Cakewalk interface (UA25EX).  Never had it happen before but also had not used layers before.  Now that you mention it, I recently changed back to WDM driver for a particular project, perhaps it's related to that...?

ASIO drivers have always worked better for me. Definitely worth a try.
