I hope they are all gone now... no more warning, just watch. Last spring they hit REAL close, close enough to hear the "train" sound. They snapped pines in half in about a half mile area just up the road... I don't like tornados near my house.
Once, about 10 years ago there was a realy bad front coming through, a squall line. It got really dark about 4:30. I thught I'd enjoy it from the garage. We had a spare fridge on the back wall of the garage in front of where the car would park but it was not there.
I got the dogs and set with my back against the refridgerator... it got darker and when the hailstones began flying in and bouncing off the wall behind me I got this feeling like I was on a ship that was about to sink... what was fun one minute all of a sudden became like the world was coming apart... thankfully it didn't touchdown but I am sure there was a tornado just up in the clouds.
Another time when I was a teen living in SW GA we were having dinner (supper actually). The table sat by a big window that faces west. We had/have a lawn about 50-60 ft from the woods. We were sitting there and a tornado popped down and twisted the top half of a poplar about 100' tall with a good 14" trunk right off. It spun around in the air a few times and set down about 20' away... it happened FAST.
There is a thin line between a thrill and mortal fear.
