Help understanding a movie

I made the mistake of watching Mullholland Drive last night.  Just when I thought I was following what was going on, it turned out to be a dream.   Except about half of the dream part was interwoven with reality.

What the heck is this movie about?  Is there some subtle message here?

What the heck is Theater Silencio?

I watched it on the first run.

My reaction to it spiraled downward after I tried to learn what Mr Lynch thought of it.

A friend of mine who has an interest in modern lit attempted to explain something about it... but he couldn't sustain the malarkey and ended up agreeing with Mr Lynch's own assessment.

    I'd almost forgotten about it.

    best,

I had forgotten about it.  it was odd.  I think it was supposed to be "shock artistic" writing.

    IDK.

I saw that film years ago....didn't have a clue what was going on. A couple of 'good' bits in it though with the girls, know what I mean.....

Been a long time since I watched it.

But I believe, broadly speaking, it's a dream about the dreams vs. realities of Hollywood.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

    I thought it was comedy.

Kind of like Adam Sandler movies.

    Here's some info from Wiki:

"Lynch remembered, "All I know is, I loved making it, ABC hated it, and I don't like the cut I turned in. I agreed with ABC that the longer cut was too slow, but I was forced to butcher it because we had a deadline, and there wasn't time to finesse anything. It lost texture, big scenes, and storylines, and there are 300 tape copies of the bad version circulating around. Lots of people have seen it, which is embarrassing, because they're bad-quality tapes, too. I don't want to think about it."[11] The script was later rewritten and expanded when Lynch decided to transform it into a feature film. Describing how he transitioned from an open-ended pilot to a feature film with a resolution of sorts, Lynch said, "One night, I sat down, the ideas came in, and it was a most beautiful experience. Everything was seen from a different angle ... Now, looking back, I see that [the film] always wanted to be this way. It just took this strange beginning to cause it to be what it is."[12] The result was an extra eighteen pages of material that included the romantic relationship between Rita and Betty and the events that occurred after the blue box was opened. Watts was relieved that the pilot was dropped by ABC. She found Betty too one-dimensional without the darker portion of the film that was put together afterward.[13] Most of the new scenes were filmed in October 2000, funded with $7 million from French production company StudioCanal.[5]"

The film could have easily been mistaken for Andy Warhol's super16mm classic "Nothing to see Here".

I've driven Mullholland Drive.  Fast.  In a sports car.  That alone felt like a dream...

We did it in a rented '69 CamArrow on one visit.

We got a '59 convertible something the next time.

    Great fun.

The '59 covertible (Skylark maybe?) was a blast on Friday nights down on the boulevard.

I'll bet even a local would enjoy it.

To be perfectly honest, once Naomi Watts took her shirt off, I stopped wondering about that ... or anything else for that matter.  It's been years ... maybe it's time to add it to the Netflix queue.
