I NEED HELP SETTING UP MY STUDIO EQUIPMENT!!!
Greetings I just started building my studio. So far... I got a Sonar 6 studio program, EMU Sound card, DR 880 Drum machine, Usb Keystation 61 midi keyboard, a digital amplfier stereo, and a condenser mic. My drum machine and mic are connected to a M-AUDIO Fast track pro using midi-cables. Ive been trying to record the dr 880 through sonar, I created a midi track, armed it with record and I have recorded a couple of drum beats. BUT! when I play it back... There is no sound. Does anyone know what to do? I have my digital Amplifier stereo on DVR settings.. thanks!

the out put of the midi track has to go to your drum machine and the audio out put of the drum machine has to go back into an audio track for you to hear it

I wouldn't plug my mic into the midi ins/outs. In fact, I dont' see how it is possible. but leaving that aside, the audio outs from your drum machine needs to go into your audio interface ins, not the midi, in order to hear it. the midi only carries triggering information, not sound. One you have cabled it, you have to patch the right signals in the audio interface's mixer (are you using the EMu or Fast track?) for sonar to "hear" the signals in its mixer to play the sound through or record the sound. This is pretty basic stuff. Get out your manuals and start reading. I know you are excited about creating music, but the first step is the grunt work and learning. All the audio signals need to get to SONAR from your audio interface, while the output from sonar needs to get to your audio interface and thus to your speakers. Midi needs to get in and out of SONAR to your midi external hardware.

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

The MIDI track you have created with drum beats on it, needs to have it's output set to either your drum machine or a soft synth that is capable of playing back drum sounds. MIDI is just instructions for an instrument that understands MIDI, it isn't audio so you can't hear it. If using your drum machine you will need to plug the audio out(s) of your drum machine into an amplifier of some sort or listen to it's output on headphones. If you want to include the audio output of the drum machine in Sonar you will need to record the audio from the drum machine as you would any other instrument. It's easier to make sure you have done all your drum editing before recording the audio, as editing MIDI data is easier than editing audio.

THANKS GUYS ! I got my Drum machine to work and record! now the MIC, Keyboard, and Guitar are next!!! NEXT PROBLEM: USB KEYSTATION 61 KEYBOARD How exactly are you suppose to use this instrument in Sonar 6? I know you have to go to options (midi devices) and click on usb keystation 61. But I can't get the the keyboard to make a sound! I understand that MIDI is just a signal that transmites to the computer and you can't exactly hear it, so How do you hear it is my question? Where do I go in the sonar to configure the sound settings for it? I recorded something with it and it picked it up, I just couldn't hear it play back or hear what I played at all.. thanks!

The reason you can't get your keyboard to make a sound is it's a MIDI keyboard transmitting MIDI data not audio. You can play either a hardware synth or a softsynth with it though. To do that.......... Insert a soft synth such as the TTS-1 from the synth rack and in the properties box that should open, check the "MIDI source" & "First Synth Audio Output" boxes. That will create a new MIDI track which you play the MIDI data into, which sends it to the TTS-1 synth you've just inserted. It also inserts an audio track which is where the TTS-1 will send the audio that the MIDI instructions create. So....... the MIDI track should have your USB Keystation 61 as it's input, select a channel such as Channel 1, and make sure that the output is set to the TTS-1 (it should be by default already done) Then on the audio track makes sure its input is set to the TTS-1 (it should be by default) and make sure that the output is routed to your soundcard, either directly or via a buss. Now when you play your keyboard you should hear sound. Probably a piano. You can change that by opening the TTS-1 interface and selecting a different patch on channel 1. Hope that all makes sense.

Ok I did everything you told me to do but it didn't work. I think it might be my sound card.. when you insert a soft synth.. do you do anything on "DISPLAY AUTOMATION ON"? Thanks for the help! I got a feeling it might be my sound card that isn't working..

"Display Automation On" won't affect your ability to play a synth. That just allows you to display any automation on a different track if you wish. Did you get it going?

Check that you haven't got any mutes or solos active and that the track the imported audio is on is routed to your soundcard, or via a buss to your soundcard. Oh and check you output is turned on and the volume is up of course.
